I happened to join a younger feller at the piss tills today and I was finished when the sound of him still peeing exceeded any splash I could make at full bore. I can't remember, but if I peed that long now I would need to go only once a day, the same frequency of a no. 2 . Is this normal? I think that when I was young I peed more than once a day.

Think you should take a bit more time to explain what your on about. Do you have a piss problem or are you trying to drag race the youngsters at the urinals.

We can hardly comment on the urination patterns of an unknown stranger. Maybe he had simply had a huge amount to drink and then a long car ride before he could relieve himself. Who knows. If you are finding that you have a problem urinating -- which is very common as men age -- you need to see a urologist. It is most likely what is called benign prostate hyperplasia, which can be treated with medication, but prostate cancer should also be ruled out.

The general average frequency for passing urine is about 4-6 times per day. Less, and you are probably dehydrated. The nerve endings in the bladder wall will initiate bladder muscle contraction at a content volume of approximately 250-300ml in a "normal" person. The prostate can obstruct flow (strength of stream) and also emptying. In the event of complete obstruction, the bladder can hold more than 1litre of urine but this is a medical emergency.

Most older men do have some extent of prostate enlargement and reduced urine flow but adequate fluid intake should be ensured as any residual urine left in the bladder can become infected and cause bladder, kidney or prostate infections.

At age 65, a digital examination of the prostate in these circumstances must be performed by a urologist to establish a diagnosis.

Yep, i'm 65 and have had the old proctologist's digit roaming around the prostate a couple of times to check for enlargement - a good thing to get done, and if you relax and think about anything else it's not so bad. A PSA test is routine, but is well-known for giving slightly unreliable results. In fact, the original post is a bit of a red herring - the OP says that IF he peed like his gushing neighbour he WOULD go only once a day - not that he only goes once a day. In my opinion, it's quite normal to have varying volumes, frequency, and rates of flow, especially when over 65 - and especially given that the official uk-BMA line is that most men over 50 can expect some change to the prostate ! Great advice already given above - NB the worry about infections flaring up in connection with inadequate hydration. Around 40 years ago i was a porter in a small London hospital, and on one bizarre day a local GP came into the ward where his daughter was staying, and brandished a pistol at the houseman cos the girl hadn't passed urine for over 24 hours - one way of learning the vital importance of fluids int he human body ! Made quite a 'splash' in the local paper ( sorry ).

4 to 6 times a day is normal then? That is interesting and possibly a bit of a relief (sorry), 2 years after successful radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer my insides are still a bit upside down. I can do a 10 hour shift in work stood up, without needing to go, but as soon as I lie down in bed that's it I'm away. 4 times a day (plus or minus) sounds about right, except after the first 2 pints and then it's once per pint.

Thank you for the replies. I was told once by a doc that the bladder loses elasticity and that is the reason there isn't much pressure, but maybe a reduction in diameter en-route would also have that effect I suppose. I have always felt that I don't drink enough, and will check volumes.
