Langkawi In Malaysia

Featured Replies

Hi all wondering if any of you have been to Langkawi in Malaysia. My friend said it's wonderful. Not too built up etc. But there are 99 islands which ones have bungalows and which ones are really built up. Any information would be great.

Thanks,

seville

Yes I went there about 9 years ago , very quiet and very pretty. Lots of wildlife , huge Monitor lizards, Tree crabs , the stuff you see on Tv nature programs.

The bungalow situation has probably changed since I went. Beer was unbelievably cheap for tax reasons , about 10 baht a bottle of Bintang :o

We styed near the Black Beach and has a blast!

The ferry journey was a bit rough, but worth it.

I went there in March 2001 for training. Stayed at the Sheraton near Khua and water was not blue - it was murky and not suitable for swimming.

Somebody said the real action is not where I was, a ferry ride would take me to diving paradise and beautiful beaches.

So, beware of gigantic hotels around Khua.

I was there in 1998. I can't remember the hotel I was in - I think it was a Marriot. Absolutely lovely Island. They have a satellite control station on a mountaintop in the center of the island which is where I was working. We mostly stayed at our resort with the exception of spending an evening at some other resort for a celebration dinner. Someone told me it was the island used during the filming of the movie South Pacific, but that may just have been a rumor.

The beautiful musical film of South Pacific was done in

Pulau Tioman, (South East of Malaysia).

If I am not mistaken, it was done in the early sixties.

At that time, it was a very deserted, beautiful, and scenic island.

I have not been there. There is a small airport there today.

Pulau Langkawi is a newly developed tourist island.

Once in two years or so, the International Air Show would

be held in this island.

Was there 15 years ago, nice and quiet. They have excellent 5 star hotels.

Is a duty free island for those on booze and smoke...
