Mysterious crop circle found in Indonesia's Yogyakarta

2011-01-25 10:04:22 GMT+7 (ICT)

YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- A mysterious crop circle appeared Sunday afternoon in a small rice field in the outskirts of the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta, local media reported Monday.

The origin of the crop circle, which measures 70 meters (230 feet) in diameter, is still unknown, and Ngadiran, one of the six farmers who own the land told the Jakarta Globe that he did not see what had caused the pattern.

Ngadiran explained that several neighbors had seen a type of tornado on Saturday, but the crop field was discovered on Sunday afternoon.

While farmers and police forces have cordoned off the area to avoid curious visitors stepping on the crop circle, experts are ruling out the possibility of extraterrestrial activity.

"We won’t be sending investigators to the scene because we suspect the crop circle involves human invention," Thomas Djamaluddin, the head of atmospheric sciences and chief of astronomy research at the National Aeronautics and Space Agency told the paper.

"The existence of aliens is unconfirmed and cannot be proved scientifically," he added.

Even though meteorological reports do not indicate any tornadoes or hurricane development in the area during the weekend, experts insist that the crop circle was likely human made.

"In England in the 1990s, two young men admitted to making crop circles, which reinforces our views that there’s a human hand behind all this," Thomas underlined.
