House fire in England kills four young children

2011-01-25 23:34:03 GMT+7 (ICT)

DERBYSHIRE, ENGLAND (BNO NEWS) -- A large house fire in the East Midlands of England killed four young children on late Monday evening, police said on Tuesday.

Firefighters and ambulance crews were called out at about 11.30 p.m. local time on Monday evening to a house at Hulland Ward near Ashbourne, a small market town in Derbyshire county. "There was significant damage to the house and as a result of the fire four young children have died," a Derbyshire Police spokesperson said.

Officials did not immediately release the names of the victims but said the children were two boys aged nine and four and two girls aged six and two. A 45-year-old woman who was also at the house was transported to Royal Derby Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

"At this stage there is no obvious sign of what caused the fire and a joint investigation between Derbyshire Constabulary and Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service will get underway later this morning," police added.
