Dtac Gprs - Data Stream Intermittent And Random

Featured Replies

I have a nagging problem that I can't seem to resolve.

Hardware:

Nokia 5233 used as modem - seems to function OK on its own

Asus netbook

Nokia cable USB

I have run full system av check with Avast as well as at boot = 0

Run Malwarebytes full check = 0

Hijack this = nothing in registry

Run CCleaner as well

The system shuts down and boots correctly.

Variables eliminated:

DTAC has not identified anything wrong on their end.

My gf has no issues with long connections on her machine

I have no other connections on ie: Bluetooth or LAN

Issue: Internet pages and iTunes podcasts will abruptly stop. In the last 12 hours, it appears to be somewhat better. Reboot usually fixes it for awhile, closing the connection and restarting it does usually as well.

I'm stumped

The strength of the signal depends on how many other people are using the same aerial as you, so you have to expect the service to be intermittent. It's the same with broadband the more people going through the sub station the slower it gets, at certain times of the day especially early evening my broadband slows down to next to nothing.

What app are you using to initiate the data call? Did this ever work satisfactorily? Can you try a different phone? A different SIM. A different PC? What set-up does your GF use (PC, phone, connection, SIM, app)?

GPRS data is very much a non-guaranteed service (as are SMS and e-mail). It utilizes free bandwidth "slots" which are shared between voice and data But voice always has priority, so when many people make phone calls in your immediate vicinity, they take bandwidth from data "calls". Depending on the capacity of your serving base-station and the number of subscribers it is easy to envision a scenario where you lose some/all bandwidth.

Trouble-shooting these situations is challenging for even those on site. Basically you want to eliminate variables in order to isolate the potential problem. Example: use a known good phone with your PC to make sure the PC is OK, then try your SIM in that phone, then try your SIM in another phone and PC...well I think you get the process.

Perhaps the simplest first step would be to get a One-2-Call SIM and try that to see if the problem persists? You can get a 20 hour data plan for 107 baht, which along with the SIM (50-ish baht), should allow you to somewhat isolate the potential problem?

Everything was fine up until I came back from Malaysia (where I had connected to an unsecured hotel wifi spot, not that this is the culprit). I am aware how slow and clunky GPRS can be - but I was (am) a pretty happy customer. I am connecting all times of day and early evening, happens all the time although seems to be better last hours. Here though is an error message:

Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): Unknown error

Its not the sim, phone. might be dtac data issue or some funky network thing in my pc. i have recently located facebook ZOOM (didnt know it really existed. Appears there is a similar function for preview in recently dl'd Chrome. I will turn these off - my thinking maybe im choking the pipe with data queries.

PS: not certain if i must close and reopen connection or if in a few minutes, it will return. That is still variable.

If anyone is still kind enough to be following this. Once the data chokes, I must reconnect but not reboot. I am also getting this error as well:

This webpage is not available.

The webpage at http://google.com/ncr might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

Here are some suggestions:

More information on this errorBelow is the original error message

Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): The server could not be found.

Ok, I am just following this up for benefit of others. I googled ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED

and appears that newly installed Chrome may be culprit although i still have issues with my podcasts - although, they often did at some random point in the long dl process - gag and die.

i have gone to options and under the hood and turned off DNS prefetch services. Wait and see.
