This One Sentence Translation Could Save My Life

Featured Replies

Here is a short version:

ผมมีโรคแพ้กุ้งและปู

แต่กินปลาและหอยได้

That one is considerably shorter. What does that one say?

It says "I am allergic to shrimp/prawn and crab but can eat fish and shellfish/oyster/clams/etc"

Though Hoy หอย can have some intresting other slang meanings too - so be careful just saying "I like to eat shellfish" ชอบกินหอย

We were in 'Lemongrass' in Bangkok... apparently a well known, high standard, Thai Restaurant...

A Thai in the group ordered all the food. When the waiter delivered it, the coleague I was sitting beside asked if the Som Tum and any prawns or shrimp... "Not have"...

I thought this a bit strange, so I asked (with my limited Thai)... an nii mee gung me mai khrup?"... waiter "Mee khrup, de noi diaw" or something "has, but only small"...

I guess seafood allergies are just not something they know about...

I don't like seafood, but am not allergic... I just stick with "phom mai chawp ahahn tallay"

Cheers,

Daewoo

That one is considerably shorter. What does that one say?

It said the same thing, but less formality.
