I thought I would post an update for callers from Uk as the phone companies will keep altering the access numbers and charges.

I actually used BestMinutes for the first time today. To Thai mobile, very clear and no time delay :o

Loong,

Hope you don't mind if I move this to the communications forum.

Just to add to what Loong has posted, you can compare the cost of the various providers at this website. (thanks to Vulture)

Furthermore, if you have a contract mobile phone, you can call for free by dialling one of the access numbers followed by the Thai number. It just uses up your monthly allowance of free calls.

Scouse.

I've also just used Bestminutes - works great.

Two points to remember:

1) some charge more for calls to mobiles rather than landlines

2) the rates change - so it pays to check before you call each time

Another link for updated charge rates (includes mobile/landline choice):

Hey Steve, everyone else,

Any experience of using one of these number from a UK mobile to call Thailand? The reason I ask - I got my mum to try one of these so-called cheap rate services to call me from her O2 PAYG phone in the UK (I can't remember off the top of my head which service it was). The website said 2p/minute for her to contact me here in Thailand (Thai mobile), and so we had a 20 minute phone call. However, it ended up costing her in the region of 6 quid!! (30p/minute) Unfortunately she's on a tight budget and that 20 minute call ate up most of her credit for the month! :o So if anyone knows of a service that'll work well from a UK mobile (particularly PAYG) phone that would be excellent.

Cheers!

Rich

Hi Rich,

AFAIK, there's no equivalent from mobiles - the service providers seem to charge crazy rates for calling non-geographic numbers (e.g. the 0844 XXXXXX type that the cheap call providers use). I did spot something that might be useful for mobile users who have bundled "free" minutes - but I suspect the pay-as-you-go set-ups don't include any "free" minutes (so it's more "pay-whatever-you-do"). Here's the link anyhow:

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/v...105983163,80958,

Maybe I should have added rule 3): It doesn't work the same way from mobiles

If your mum doesn't have her own landline, could she use one at a friend's or neighbour's place? The 1p per minute rate is all that's charged (from landlines).

Edit: Just realised that I've part-duplicated what The Scouser said above. Still worth reading the explanation/guide on the link above - but, as it says there, you're still advised to experiment with a brief call or two (then check the bill) to see if it's working the way you hope.

There is always an add on charge or connection fee with these companies. Try I phonecards they keep the bill down I believe moreso.

For PAYG; Virgin PAYG in conjunction with a 0845 number will cost 10p per min to call a Thai mobile.

For the benefit of Fraktalkid and anyone else in his situation, here's a link to "DialAbroad" which seems to specialise in low-cost international calls from UK mobiles. Can't comment on whether it's worthwhile, but costs for calls to BKK (landline numbers, I assume) look interesting:

http://www.dialabroad.co.uk/mobile/

The rates are quite poor. Other than providing a 0207 number...

In some cases it may be cheaper to call direct from the mobile telephone.

I'm reasonably sure that many people calling to Thailand will be calling to mobile telephones.

Even the cost to a landline outside Bkk is 12p per min plus a 10p connection charge plus whatever the cost of calling a landline or 0800 number costs from your mobile telephone. For PAYG, that could be an additional 40p per min.

(This can be reduced by using Vodafone Stop the Clock or some o2 deals).

Some o2 contracts that allow 0844 numbers to be treated as standard calls are another option.

Maybe cheaper to call your Ma yourself. 10p per min direct from your mobile.

are these services cheaper than using Skype Out ??

IP telephone is better to call from anywhere, not only from the UK

http://www.skype.com/products/skypeout/rat...y=GBP#listing-T

Euro is always used for maintaining your account balance and billing. Rates in other currencies are made available for your convenience only, and may fluctuate from day to day.

Thailand - Mobile  GBP 0.073 inc vat.

So, no Sykpeout is not cheaper.
