Blizzard warning issued for U.S.' Midwest and New England

2011-02-01 08:13:38 GMT+7 (ICT)

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- The National Weather Service (NWS) on Monday issued a blizzard warning that will be affecting several states in the Midwest and continue its way up to New England with heavy snow fall and strong wind currents.

The NWS has described the blizzard as a "potentially life threatening winter storm" for some areas such as Chicago, Illinois, and is expected to hit the Midwest region, as well as New England, as of Monday night.

According to the warning, the winter storm is expected to develop over Texas Monday night, and intensify rapidly as it moves northeast into the Ohio Valley Tuesday night and Wednesday, then eventually re-form off the mid-Atlantic or New England coast late Wednesday.

The storm has the potential to produce one to two feet of snow for a large swath of the central and northeastern states, from Oklahoma to Maine, with a swath of heavy freezing rain (quarter inch or more) to the south and east of the heavy snow area, including along the Mason-Dixon line north of Washington, D.C., the NWS stated.

Snowfall in the Chicago area could reach up to 18 inches with northeast winds of 25 to 40 miles per hour. Meanwhile, a combination of ice, sleet, and snow is expected to hit some areas of Missouri.
