Tanzania police arrest suspect over mass baby grave

2011-02-02 01:53:02 GMT+7 (ICT)

DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA (BNO NEWS) -- Police on Tuesday arrested the alleged prime suspect over the dumping of ten newborn babies in a shallow pit near a hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's Daily News reported.

Regional Police Commander, Charles Kenyela, said that they were pursuing a second suspect and would question the mothers of the ill-fated babies, whose particulars were in hospital records.

The remains of the ten babies were found wrapped in a sheet belonging to the hospital in a shallow pit outside a house in the hospital neighborhood on Monday.

According to official sources, the oldest victim of the dumping was born on Monday last week and the youngest a day or two before the incident.

The bodies of all the ten babies are said to have been given to the respective mothers, and there are suggestions that they may have contracted unscrupulous undertakers to bury the remains.

Municipal Director Raphael Ndunguru has formed a five-member team to investigate how the bodies of the babies ended up in a 'mass grave.' A comprehensive report will be submitted within seven days.
