Hi To all,

I'm 70 years old and stay a long time in Thailand. It is no problem for me to make a NON-Immigrant visa.

My problem is my back I cant sit four hours in the minibus. So I like to know how many times can I make a border run.

I hope that my back is better after 2 or 3 months.

Best regard

There is no set limit on visa exempt entry (I believe that is what you are talking about) and your age should help limit working worries. If there is any way you could qualify for one year extensions of stay (800k in bank account 2 months or 65k pension or combination to meet 800k) it would likely be better for the long run.

I have a question for Lopburi

This 800K thing.

Why are so many people reluctend to stash that aside?

enless ofcourse it would reduce a(too) big amount of their daily spending money.

my question is this.

Do you know WHY immigration wants to see this amount.?

What happens for excample if you are dead?

is it a guarentee for unpaid bills or just a way to ensure the big spenders?

(in other words 800k on the bank and live on handouts)

Whats a PM salary around here ? 1 mill?

just curious

As the requirement is only that the money be there for a short period prior to application each year it is not a bond type deposit as is the case in some countries. Basically a show that you have the funds to stay solvent for 12 months.

As the basis for stay is retirement most countries set a 'cash show' amount to help prove you can live without recourse to government funds during your stay. For Thailand they have set it at 800k. Even with this requirement we are seeing frequent reports of medical bills not being paid from this segment so it is not a cure all but believe you will find most countries setting up some kind of mark such as this.

As to why some do not wish to abide by this requirement suspect the current low interest rates are a large factor, as well as the financial means of many who wish to retire here (for lower expenses group). Do depending on you point of view the amount it large or small and more than other countries or less than other countries. As one short medical procedure could easily require more than 800k it does not really allow must spending money if that is all you have. For the those who have more but just don't want to have in Thailand there is the non immigrant O-A visa available.

Hello hgma

you ask Lopburi3 (beside he is a very competend person in visa / immigration questions I see al the years) but maybe he still take his breakfast and I think I can give you some idea.

First at all it's not only the 800'000 THB; you can have a combination of Deposit and confirmed income (eg. social insurance from your home country etc.) Higher your income lower the deposit.

The amount of a minimum of 65'000 Bath monthly is to cover you as an security in case acceident, sickness etc. and you would need care in a hospital. This because many foreigner live here without "health insurance" and certain hospital wouldn't let you go in, you just would care yourself on the stairs in front of hospital!!!

Look around in the neighbour countries, there most force you to get visa to have a approved health insurance, eg Indonesia you shall have a income of 1500 $, health insurance, prove of rent house or condo at min 500 $ if it is Jakarta or Bali and hire a housekeeper.

Malaysia have similar conditions but income min 3200 $ / month and /or much higher Deposit.

So we can be lucky with the conditions in Thailand. The other fact that if married you need only 400'000 and/or combined with 45'000 (not sure) income nobody can explain me real but I guess your Thai wife would be able buy food etc., rent house etc. for Thai and not FARANG price!!! You understand what I mean!

No reason to be sorry - your input is as valuable as mine or anyone else.
