Ministry Wants Customs Checkpoints Open Despite Border Conflict

The Finance Ministry has asked customs officials along the Thai-Cambodian border to keep the gates open even though tension in the area remains high.

Meanwhile, the Thai Chamber of Commerce University believes recent border clashes have not hurt cross-border trade much.

Deputy Finance Minister Pradit Phataraprasit said the military clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border have been worrisome for many.

Still, he urged customs officials in the area to continue facilitating trade between the two neighbors and to try to keep the border checkpoints, which were not directly affected, open.

Customs Department Director General Prasong Puntanet said he is still waiting for clarification from the state security force on the opening of the checkpoints.

He affirmed that so far, there has not been any report on shrinking cross-border trade.

Meanwhile, the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce's Economic and Business Forecasting Center Director Thanawat Polvichai commented that the effects of the border clashes on trade should not have been severe.

He said that, as long as the border checkpoints in Sakaew, Chanthaburi and Trat provinces remain open, Thai-Cambodian trade should have not been hurt significantly.

On the implementation of the Internal Security Act in certain parts of Bangkok and the ongoing anti-government rallies, Thanawat said these factors will likely pose more serious impact on the Thai economy.

He said political turmoil can hurt tourism and domestic consumption as well as lead to tens of billions of baht in economic losses.
