Iranian parliament calls on UN to investigate Mubarak's crimes as rallies in support of Egypt are banned

TEHRAN (BNO NEWS)- The Iranian Parliament's Human Rights Committee congratulated Egyptian people on their victory and called on the UN to investigate the crimes committed by ousted President Mubarak and his accomplices, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the committee said that Mubarak and his accomplices committed a wide range of crimes, including the massacre of a large number of unarmed citizens and attacks on protesters with military vehicles, that need to be investigated by international organizations and communities, including the UN.

Iran has refused permission for an opposition rally on February 14 in support of the Arab uprisings. Opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi was put under house arrest on Thursday after calling for the rally.

"By announcing that they will not allow opposition protests, the Iranian government has declared illegal for Iranians what it claimed was noble for Egyptians," the U.S. National Security Advisor Tom Donilon said Saturday in a statement.

The United States has strongly condemned Iran's position and accused the Iranian government of blocking information about Egypt because it's "scared of the will of its people."

"So for all of the empty talk about Egypt, the Iranian government should allow the Iranian people to exercise the very same right of peaceful assembly and ability to demonstrate and communicate their desires," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said during a press briefing on Friday.
