Hi there,

My work contract is up for renewal on the 15th of March and I have just been informed that due to decreasing numbers of students in our program (it's a private vocational school offering an international program) my contract isn't being renewed.

It is a fact that as Thailand gets more prosperous, family sizes are getting smaller and there are less students 'to go around'. So is such bad news merely a sign of the times for Thailand? On the other hand, aren't the Thais going to be in desperate need of native English teachers in the near future as 2015 approaches, and with it, the opportunities the ASEAN freedom of education plan?

Cheers

James

Sorry to hear. I hope you've another job lined up.

Decreasing numbers of students might have other reasons than the quality of the English part of your program. What about other competitive schools, the quality of the current management, the quality of the Thai part of the program or the demography in your area?

I'm sorry to hear that the OP's contract isn't being renewed; hopefully the school gave sufficient time to find something else. The Thai National Statistical Office publishes historical data on income per capita and fertility which I think supports your idea that rising economic prosperity correlates with smaller families. The nso's website refers to lowering 'Mean no. children born per married woman', but I'm no economist so maybe you'd get a more enlightened response in another section of this forum.

On the other hand the number of schools and educational establishments have never been higher and so location, competition and quality are ever more crucial factors. Over the past year the language school I work at in Bangkok has reversed spiralling students numbers and grown slightly after the quality of the sales staff and receptionists was improved.
