I have received some bad news from the UK, and was wondering if I and my wife went home in July for a visit, she of course with her visa in her passport, what would happen if we had to return to England again for a family funeral.

Would the 6 month rule apply or can she apply for a multi entry visa.

From what you have said, it appears that you are resident in Thailand with your wife. (If not, and you live in the UK and she in Thailand, it wouldn't really change any of what follows.)

In your circumstances, there is no reason why an application from her for a long term visit visa should not be successful. See VAT1.4 Visa validity - What period for a multiple entry visit visa?

If she does hold one, then she would still be limited to a maximum of 6 months in the UK on any one visit and, in most circumstances, a maximum of 6 months out of any 12 in the UK.

However, the 6 months out of 12 is not an actual rule, and I am certain that a family bereavement would be an acceptable reason for her to return to the UK as a visitor shortly after a 6 month visit.
