I'm one of the realists mentioned above. Every time I head back to Thailand I tell myself that I will not let it get me down but it does. I can find almost nothing positive about Thailand anymore. I feel sorry for my wife because I complain way to much.

I feel sorry for your wife also

As long as I can sleep with a woman half my age I don't really give a stuff about anything else in the country.

I can only guess that the foreigners not liking Thailand can no longer get it up (am I allowed to say that?)

Although I reserve the right as a British citizen to winge and whine about anything I feel like on TV.

Can't do that today. I heard the bars are all closed today. Better you come on over to my place and have a beer here. There's more than enough pretty girls to go around. :D

For many guys there is little or no opportunity to provide for themselves or their family the lifestyle they desire and this manifests itself in this incessant negative attitude towards life here.

I pity those who associate happiness with income, life has so much more to offer.

And anyway, having a moan about an incident that has happened or a situation that they are not keen on doesn't make a person unhappy. It just means that they are speaking their mind.

Of course though, some people are just plain miserable, whether they are rich or poor.

+1, :)

What amazes me is the nagative attitude of some posters on this forum.

There are those who can only see bad in this country.

Every little thing is wrong, the Govt is crooked, corrupt, a disaster.

These are usually the guys that have been robbed by their wife or are in the process of being robbed by their wife

100% correct.

This has to be one of the most honest and accurate statements ever posted on this forum. :clap2:

Also, not being able to achieve and maintain an erection and at the same time coming to the understanding that you are not actually a handsome man.

However, final acceptance of this results in true enlightened happiness.

I think it is mainly the thirty-somethings that have the most negative attidude, as they must wonder how they can possibly live here for the next 30/40 years.

Negativity is a much maligned state. For some people, negative energy propels them onward, upward and forward. Think of magnets and how they can be harnessed to move objects. If there were no positive and no negative states then those high speed rail vehicles that move based upon the "clash" of negative and positive charges wouldn't move.

A good dose of negativity is a life sustainer and can keep some people from undertaking foolish and dangerous activities. How about the happy go lucky guy that falls for the smiles and the atmosphere of Patong and buys a beer bar? He's positive he can make a go of it. he's positive he can trust the staff, he's positive he'll make a fortune pimping out the girls or boys and playing his 1970's heavy metal noise. If he had been negative, he wouldn't be broke 6 months later.

Mr. Forbes brother is the smart one. What Mr. Forbes the elder sees as misery, Mr. Forbes the younger sees as happiness. What Mr. Forbes the younger terms are losers, really are most likely losers. Mr. Forbes the elder can reject the economical rationing of time investment in people from his younger brother, but I suggest that the younger one is the one least likely to be disappointed or to have lost money and time on useless activities or people.

I am quite positive that negativity on some Thai issues is actually a positive state. laugh.gif

So, Ying and Yang really.

When you're cynical, everything becomes clear.

I don't get It. I have being coming to Thailand for about 5 years now and I love it, when I have to go back to the States to work, I consider it as doing time.

My Thai wife is wonderful, when my business in the US went belly up, and I lost all my money, my wife worked 12 hrs a day 6 days a week and supported us.Her family are nice, honest, hard working people. I dont think I have anything negative to say about anyone in Thailand.

Are there bad people and situations here? sure, like any place in the world, and like any other semi-intelligent person, I do my best to avoid them, do I fall victim to them some times? sure I do, but I consider it, the price of doing business, and I move on.

This is not a Thain problem, it is a human problem.

Are we all talking about The same Thailand? The Thailand where an ugly block like me can be married to a beautiful, wonderful, woman half my age? Live in a mansion that cost me $100,000 usd to to build?

go out at the koong restaurant with the whole family of 10 , have a banquet fit for a king, for 1,000 bht? drive like a loony, and when the police stop's you buy a get out of jail free card for 200 bht? go to the dam lake in KK, lay in the shade of a bamboo hut by the water, and while waching the kids having the time of their life playing in the water, ring a cowbell and have a lady magically appear ad bring you food and beer for a few baht??

I can go on for ever,,,I am sure you can come back with an equally long list of of bad things about Thailand.

Remember we all find what we are looking for :jap: .

I think I cleaned out Tescos of the whole lot, Rakers. I can loan you a pair, though... for a nominal charge of course. :D

Now THAT is a positive spin on an otherwise negative person. Congratulations. :jap:

Meanwhile I'll just stay being happy in my ignorance. But, you are right in one thing... All those beautiful women who visit me on a regular basis are expensive and I might run out of money when I'm a little over 250 years old. Oh, make that 300 years. I'm already 285 by most standards.

It is important to recognise that when one understands the Dharma, one only needs rice and a little nam pla to sustain the body.

This will also lead one into a state of supreme enlightenment.

OR in my case a box of Leo does the job.

Yes, but if he keeps it up that attitude, then pray tell the chances of everyone on TV eventually feeling VERY sorry for him?

Have house, car, motorbikes, have bought gold for teerak then?

Every little thing is wrong, the Govt is crooked, corrupt, a disaster.

The army is running the country.

The elite are running the country.

PAD is running the country

The police are crooked, corrupt, a disaster.

The economy is a mess.

The trafic is horrendous.

Polution is out of control.

ETC,ETC.

Then once they have had a go at everything, sometimes in the most derogatery terms the come out and say there is no freedom of speech.

To see this you only have to look at some posts in the last hour on the news forum.

I like it here, the place has never done me any harm and I get smiles and good service everywhere I go.

Hay Ian, I think you and I have things in common, think I'll go fishing now.

Re the above disadvantages: Good reasons not live in Thailand, and I don't.

I went for a long run this afternoon. It's like running through a post apocalyptic sh*t hole, complete with over powering stenches, overgrown concrete, decaying buildings everywhere, holes peppering the pavement, dog carcasses, lunatic drivers, every kind of litter strewn everywhere and of course noise noise noise from every direction. I did of course see a couple of nice young ladies whom I may of been able to pick up, even if I were a geriatric.

By most accounts I do live in a good area of Thailand. From my travels Rayong seems more modern than much of Thailand. One of the roads I was running down is only 18 months old but is already more than falling apart. Do you live in an area without smells and with functioning pavements and without noise pollution? Are you sure that you are in Thailand?

Granted there are plenty areas of concern and yes I wish the standards were better, but I much prefer to live here than anywhere else.

As for you, I really don't understand what is keeping you here; you must be a bit of a masochist

What do you call someone who detests his location and situation in Thailand, yet every time he returns to Thailand it is to that same location and situation .. and he expects it to be pleasant?

BTW, if you want great roads, try Suphan Buri. ;)

To treat a negative attitude you can:

  • Force your mind to focus on the positive things that are happening in the world (but not to the point where you totally ignore reality) and follow that up by taking positive actions to make life better (and not just for you). It also helps to eat healthy foods and exercise each day.

  • The other way--the one most people follow--really does not work: sitting at a bar all day and night drinking yourself to death or engaging in other destructive addictions.

  • Still others totally ignore reality. That is only a temporary fix and is not recommended, but it appears to be very popular worldwide.

Thank you, that will be US$500 :) You can send the money via Western Union to Awahalitsiktoli, c/o Cherokee Nation, USA. :)

Depending on where you live, Thailand is v beautiful, relaxed and still (generally) cheaper than the West.

If you're living in Bangkok, move to a more beautiful area. There are many down-sides to living here, but there are many good things too.

Yes, but you're in a minority. Most Westerners are looking for someone half their age that actually loves them - and become extremely disillusioned when they realise this is not the case, its all about money

Getting back to the OP, perhaps there are more negative posts now because its only in the last few years that 'hordes' of Westerners retired to Thailand? And most of them have fallen for the 'you so hansum' line and lost a lot of money? A few (I knew one of them) committed suicide when he realised that he had lost everything.

Most have enough money left to be able to continue, but are (understandably) upset and angry, even though UNTIL it happened to them, they'd been happily posting how everything is wonderful here and how Western women suck!
