Muslim Brotherhood to establish political party in Egypt

2011-02-23 03:53:13 GMT+7 (ICT)

CAIRO, EGYPT (BNO NEWS) -- The Muslim Brotherhood on Tuesday announced that it will establish a political party named Freedom and Justice, the Daily News Egypt reported.

The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) is the largest opposition group in the North African country and in the past authorities denied its attempts to be officially recognized as it has been banned since 1954.

In addition, a recent constitutional amendment prohibits the formation of religion-based parties such as MB and Christian Copts. However, after the ousting of former President Hosni Mubarak and the establishment of a new regime, the MB intends to become official once and for all.

"This is the best time to establish political parties in Egypt in light of the January 25 Revolution, regardless of parliamentary elections," said MB senior member Essam El-Erian.

According to El-Erian, all segments of the Egyptian society will welcomed to join the Freedom and Justice party, including Coptic Christians. Analysts said that the opening of MB to Christians is a good sign as long as the party is not based on sectarian or military principles.

Following the ousting of former president Mubarak, other groups announced their intentions to form a political party. On Saturday, Al-Wasat, a moderate Islamic group was granted recognition by an Egyptian court after seeking license for 15 years.

The army took control of Egypt after Mubarak stepped down and announced that it will run the country temporarily for six months or until elections are held. Mubarak, who led Egypt as president for three decades, left the country after weeks of anti-government protests by crowds calling for greater democracy and respect of human rights.

The military council also dissolved the parliament and suspended the constitution. The Egyptian Higher Military Council appointed a committee in charge of proposing constitutional amendments to address demands of the people.
