Just returned home from visiting Bkk Hospital in one of the major city's in Thailand and must say I was rather surprised to learn from a nurse I know from previous visits, that they actually charge foreigners more than Thais for identical procedures.
I knew and fully understand that public hospitals charges non-Thai citizens the actual cost of the health-care they receive, I agree that the government should not subsidize foreign citizens health-care. (Leave that to the western country's). But charging extra for already profitable healh-care just because they are foreigners makes me feel disgusted.
Knowing that a lot of farangs dies not being able to afford needed health-care, I find it deeply immoral that this version of two-tier practice actually exists.

Go elsewhere is the best, Bangkok Hospitals have ridiculous pricing, ok if you have insurance, i went recently, very good, had insurance

My treatment this time is not covered by insurance. Don't mind paying but thought the 2-tier pricing thing in health-care was isolated to the subsidized public sector. Silly me! Never mind the national parks, this policy is actually killing people...

so, people without insurance have enough cash to seek treatment at private hosiptal but only if they are charged normal rates.....

Seems to me those types should go to a goverment facility to avoid a gofundme!

Large proprtion of Thais I've met in the UK are super scammy - married for money, on bennys, working on the sly. Basically freeloaders.

I recall a court case ( a Dutchman?) took a hospital (HuaHin?) to court.....and lost.

It is legal to have two tier pricing.

My experience - a 20 minute detailed full body skin examination at a BKK Hospital about Baht 5,000; same procedure at Bumrungrad Hospital by a similarly qualified (US educated) and experienced dermatologist about Baht 2,000.

In discussion with my insurance carrier, Pacific Cross, I suggested that they make an effort to enroll selected public hospitals in their direct pay program to control the out of control rent seeking by Bangkok Hospital. They said they were adding additional public hospitals - I note that one of our options for treatment at a public hospital in Korat (Suranaree University of Technology Hospital) is now accepted into their network for direct pay .

As I understand it public hospitals typically charge foreigners the cost of care which is entirely reasonable, e.g. my colonoscopy last year was ThB 24,000 all in including lab fees to examine one polyp and two nights in a private room with all the boiled rice I could tolerate. Their the bill was inflated by requiring inpatient care when in the U.S. this is typically outpatient (drink their nasty tasting drink, toilet at home, and get transported with an accompanying driver because of the anesthetic). Here it appears they don't trust their patients to follow instructions for pre-op routines and to show up on time so they treat us like children.

Until insurance companies offer some pushback to Bangkok Hospital pricing by covering other hospitals they will never give up their quasi monopoly in many provinces/regions. If you have an acceptable public hospital near to you that you have used you might request that your insurance company consider adding them to their network.

Well known fact for years. A Scandinavian guy a fews years back took the hospital to court over it and lost. Judge told him flat out it was completely ok as foreugners can afford to pay more

They're a corrupt people and, to be fair that's probably a big part of the attraction for many long stayers.
