Hello,

I am in Chiang mai and the stamp on my passport allows me to stay until the 9th of March. Where is the best place to do a border run from here? I am a canadian citizen with a regular passport no visa.

Should I go to laos and get try for the 90day? 8 hour bus?

How about myanmar? is there a close place i can go? Can I get a visa there? I don't mind going to the thai embassy. Is there close to the border?

Sorry, a lot of questions.

Thanks for the help in advance!

You need to go to Vientiane Laos. You will be able to apply for and receive double entry tourist visas . That's 2x60/30 which will give 6 months.. You have two was of getting there a 12 hour bus trip Chiang Mai To Udon Thain and then a short Tuk Tuk drive to the boarder then into Vientiane. About 800 baht each way. Or you can fly Nok Air for 5000 baht return from Chiang Mai to Udon and then the same tuk tuk to boarder. Either way you will need to stay over night in Vientiane. You turn your passport in to the embassy in the morning and pick up the fooling afternoon. The visas are free until 31 March.

I guess our opinions of what a short tuk tuk ride is differs considerably.

I think I'd opt for the flight to Udon Thani, then take a bus to Nong Khai.

Then take the short tuk tuk ride to the border. Or, you might even be able to get a bus from NK all the way into Vientianne. In that case you'd need to have your Lao Visa in advance.

If another 30 days is enough you could do Air Asia down to Singapore on 8th and back on 9th for less than 6000Bt. You'd need to factor in a night at a hotel too of course.

Or fly to Phnom Penh . Double entry tourist visa are free there.

Maesai will give you 15 days, as will other land crossings. Vientianne is a beast of a trip, but if you don't look like a dirty backpacker you might get a double 60.

How far is it to the Maesai border?

If you take The "Green Bus Company" Bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai continue on to Mae Sai. Looks like the most comfortable bus going that routing. About 200-300 each way first class or vip.

180 Kilometers from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai thru the mountain pass is less than a 3 hour journey.

Then Mae Sai is about an hour trip or less from Chiang Rai.

The bus probably stops at the Mae Sai bus station. From there take a songtow taxi to the border and back.
