Rumanian Caught Stealing from Exchange Booths



A light-fingered approach to changing money at various currency exchanges around Pattaya brought in about 100, 000 Baht until Pattaya’s police put an end to a Rumanian’s spree.

PATTAYA, 24th February 2011 [PDN] – At 4.00 pm, Col Nunthawut Suwanlaong, Pattaya Police Superintendent, together with his deputies and in conjunction with Chon Buri Transnational Crime Suppression Centre officers announced the arrest of a Rumanian national a suspected thief with the stolen money. Various currencies had been stolen, including 4,625 Euros, 3,187 Dollars, 14 Malaysian Ringgits and 12,890 Thai Baht.

I love these pictures they take when they catch someone- especially in this case with the women pointing at him for added effect. Is there a story behind how these photos first started, or is it just a (sometimes amusing) quirk?

My understanding is that pointing at people (rather than things) is considered much more rude in Thailand than in the west. So the pointing ritual here is even more of an extreme statement than it looks. It's basically dehumanizing the perp, an apt preparation for Thai prison I suppose.

Romanian suspected of theft from Money Exchange Booths caught by Pattaya Police

PATTAYA: -- A Romanian National accused of stealing money from Foreign Exchange booths from around Pattaya has been arrested by Pattaya Police. Police Colonel Tirapon, the Deputy Commander of Chonburi Provincial Police, led a press conference at the Transnational Crime Center at Pattaya Police Station on Thursday Night to confirm the arrest of Mr. Paul Adrian Trica aged 35 who was arrested at the Diana Inn Hotel where he was residing in room number 401.

The policeman is forcing his head up by putting his hands around his neck, fingers pressed into the center of this throat. There is no call for that.

His fingers don't look as they are pressing to me, and his head isn't up!
