I want to take a break of a week or less in s-e asia. HK, Taiwan, Penang, Singapore, KL, China come to mind. My criteria are:

- no visa problem for my accompanying girl friend with a thai passport (I have a british passport).

- relaxation for me (happy with a book or walking around - a beach would be nice but not essential); some shops/shopping for gf

- decent hotel (equivalent standard to say a 200 bht a night place in Chiangmai) and at reasonable local price

- arrangeable quickly and with minimum fuss (hotel/ticket) as I want to leave in a fortnight

- all the destinations I mention above would have a roughly similar cost of air ticket, I think

Would appreciate all concrete suggestions.

Well, I'm glad the typo was picked up quickly - even if in picturesque terms - by someone. I meant to write 2000 baht, of course.

Decent hotel for 200 Baht a night???????????

You'll both need visas for China.

200 baht per night??? That is a shyt hole.

Decent hotels in Sg and KL are a bit more expensive than in Thailand. Singapore is a great "break" from Thailand and has lots to do and see.

Ummm another place to consider might be Bali.

But any of these places should be easy for a Thai person to get a visa to, right? I know I traveled to China with my ex-GF many years ago. And traveled to Singapore with my wife before we were married.

OP: you mention a relaxing place. I'm not sure I would say a major city is a good place to relax. Be a tourist? For sure! I love HK. But relaxing, it ain't! Heck, most of China is not relaxing.

What about Boracay in the PI? I've never been, but heard it is beautiful with a fair amount to do. Bali has some great beaches, but avoid Kuta and surrounds!!!!!

Dont need to go so far, take cruise down the Meakong from Pakse to the 4000 islands, you will get accomodation for around your 200b and your GF will even be able to understand the language.

Boracay will cost u more than staying in Phuket and thats before u add on the airfare.

Cambodia is ur best bet as u can travel by bus, she does not need a visa and u can get urs at the border. Shianoukville is ok for a day or two as is Phnom Penh then make ur way up to Siem Rep before heading back to Thailand. all done on bus's. Great places to satay ofr under 1,000 bhta./night in all the palces.

Bali is great place as well, Arrive at the ariport and grab a taxi up to Ubid and then rent a car. Cars are cheap to rent and gas is dirt cheap and it is beautiful , Visas on arrival.

If ur going to fly somewhere u might not be able to leave when u want to

I'm prepared to forego the relaxing bit. Any specific recommendations for hotels in HK and Bali? No visa needed there for a thai?

Thanks for that. Sounds like you know Sg and Bali well. Do you have a hotel you'd recommend in either or both places - even if it's more than the 2000 bht I initially indicated?

The other places he mentioned a Thai can get entry without a visa but both would have to apply for a China visa which is easy to get if you have all the paperwork they want and takes a week. It's just an extra expense and hassle that can be avoided.

Bali is a great place and cheap, outside of the kuta/legion area.

Just head to Ubid and head to the area around the Monkey temple. places from 500 baht up to 10,000 depends on what creature comforts u need.

Lovian beach ( the black sand beach) is very beautiul and places can be had on the beach. this is a new place a friend of mine just is opening Bali

My last trip to sinagpiore was end of last month,. its VERY expensive except for eating in the food courts.

u can find places in little Inda for 500 baht for a dorm bed up to 1,000 baht.

we stayed at the Ibis on Bencollen and it was S$180/night but great service and location

if u can swing the bucks go stay at resort international or hard rock on sentosa but expect to pay $300 or more/night.
