I can't remember paying a deposit before, I may have done though!

My contract had a provision for the 6k (had to pay if I cancelled) and I got the router.

Sounds about right. I don't think you actually pay the deposit though. I think it's a penalty for quitting service before the contract expires.

edit: Although if you get the service in your landlord's name it would certainly be fitting to give him the penalty money as a deposit till the term has expired.
