Buff-horns
Thai women 'lured into prostitution' Panel will probe Taiwan marriages By Surasak Tumcharoen The House Committee on Labour has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday to investigate a spate of marriages between Thai women and Taiwanese men which have allegedly resulted in the women becoming prostitutes in Taiwan. Committee chairwoman Pimpa Chantaraprasong announced that her panel will investigate allegations that a number of Thai women had been lured into token marriages with Taiwanese men only to end up as working as prostitutes. Up to 2,000 women married to Taiwanese men obtained marriage certificates at Phra Khanong district office last year. However, many of the certificates were allegedly provided to the women without the presence of their spouses at the office. Ekaporn Rakkhuamsuk, adviser to the House Committee on Labour, said the women said to have been caught up in the scam had not only been lured into prostitution, but were also forced to borrow money from loan sharks at exorbitant rates in Taiwan.Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayothin, Phra Khanong district chiefs and representatives of the Office of the Attorney-General and the Department of Special Investigations are expected to testify before the panel on the issue. source: bangkokpost.com
