Court Hands Hardline Red-shirt 4-Year Jail Sentence

The Criminal Court has sentenced a hardline red-shirt supporter to four years in jail for illegal possession of weapons.

The Criminal Court has handed a four-year sentence and a 1,000 baht fine on Pornwat Thongthanaboon, for illegal possession of several weapons.

Pornwat is widely known as 'K-Thong', a close associate of the late renegade Major-General Khattiya Sawasdipol, also known as 'Seh Dang'.

In January of last year, Pornwat was arrested for possession of ammunition for various types of assault firearms such M-16 rifles.

Pornwat was later arrested in March in the parking lot of the Crime Suppression Division Headquarters in Bangkok, carrying an unregistered pistol.

K-Thong was escorting Seh Dang to the police office to acknowledge criminal charges, when he was searched while waiting in a white van in the parking lot.

The court ruled that Pornwat has violated a number of firearm laws, having possesses restricted various firearms and ammunition on numerous accounts, which carries a maximum penalty of a four-year prison sentence and a 1,000 baht fine.

However, the sentence was reduced to 2 year imprisonment and a 500-baht fine because Pornwat pleaded guilty to his crimes.

The hardline red-shirt supporter is also currently on trial for violation of computer crime laws.

In February of last year, Pornwat uploaded a video clip of himself threatening the public of terrorist attacks on a popular video website.

The court is currently deliberating the case.

On Friday, Major General Khattiya with his lawyers traveled to the Criminal Court to request for a temporary release of Mr Pornwat. 400,000-THB cash is prepared for the bail; however, the court is considering whether to approve the request or not.

The army specialist claimed that his close aide was innocent. He said all the clips with faces and voices of Mr Pornwat shown in websites were purely fabricated.

Mr Pornwat is charged for breaching the Criminal Code by feeding information about grenade blasts and social turmoil in Bangkok through computer networks as well as carrying weapons in public places.

Guess, in Thailand you can never exercise your right to remain silent cause that could get you more than ten if not life. So remember to incriminate yourself to get a lowered sentence.

Wasn't it only yesterday that jatuporn was criticising the DSI for botching their report and claiming the military were the ones with M16 rifles and it was a bullet from one of those rifles which killed the Japanese photographer and today we have this nugget of information

Jatuporn will be feeling right now that he has swallowed a live frog and the forum red cheerleaders will go silent as they always do when this sort of stuff pops up. Somehow I don't think Thaksin will bother to play the fake red card. A fugitive Red Shirt member surrendered this today according to the other paper.

He is Police Major Sa-ngiam Samranrat and he turned himself in at Surat Thani and is being transferred to Bangkok to face charges of trespassing on Parliament last April.

He was part of a large number of Reds who stormed into Parliament and he is also alleged to have taken a weapon away from a policeman there, but says he did so only in order to prevent violence.

Not sure which you are referring to as the "King Power case".

All monetary assessments of the damages caused by the two different factions has the Red Shirts efforts far surpassing those of the Yellows. If you have some differing information available to that, I'd be interested in reading about it.

As far as why no one has been properly punished yet for the airport, I'm intrigued as well as to why a far more violent incident occurring well before it and involving the same people that subsequently led additional violent incidents 2 years later and then, remarkably again, 3 years later with all occasions involving much more violence than the airport case still have not been made to face up to their crimes.

Interesting question. What makes a photo anti-whoever? Just being questioned by police is not sufficient, that may happen to all of us. A photo is probably only anti-someone if doctored or presented in an incorrect or purposely incorrect environment.

When a defendant pleads guilty, like K-Thong did, that person is admitting it is he who committed the offenses with which he is charged with. Pleading guilty and admitting to charges are the same thing.

Habitual means that something is repeated over a period of time.

Threatening to blow up banks, warning people not to go and invest in the stock market because the Stock Exchange building has been targeted with bombing, announcing that a state of civil war exists, being caught with multiple weapons and ammunition when all are combined are indicative of terrorist-like acts.

I suppose I could amend my remarks, which were just a reflection of asiawatcher's terminology in my reply to him, to:

Todays "terrorists" become tomorrows "freedom fighters" sometimes. Hope for your blood pressures sake that the winning side is your side when this little diversion is over. You're right in that I probably would consider leaving Thailand if for some reason, this turned into a "victory sign" after K-Thong was elected Prime Minister:

One thing I would disagree with and that is I don't need to pretend my views matter to the locals. Having 12 Thais change the party they vote for after discussing issues with me over time is proof, albeit small, that I do have some degree of impact.
