Hamas arrests wanted Jihad leader in Gaza

2011-03-04 00:41:12 GMT+7 (ICT)

GAZA (BNO NEWS) -- Hamas security forces on Thursday announced the arrest of the alleged leader of a global Jihad militant group in Gaza, the Haaretz newspaper reported.

Hisham Saidani, leader of the Tawhid al-Jihad, was arrested at his residence in the central Gaza refugee camp of al-Maazi. He had been on Hamas' most wanted list for the last 18 months.

The Tawhid al-Jihad is a criminal organization associated with al-Qaeda and other global Jihad groups. The arrest took place earlier this week and was conducted peacefully and without resistance.

Hamas security forces tried to arrest Saidani in repeated occasions as well as his global jihad network operating in Gaza. Last month, Hamas arrested Mahmoud Taleb, another suspected leader of groups associated with global jihad.

Tawhid al-Jihad had been linked with the 2004 terrorist attacks against tourist destinations in the Sinai. In addition, the jihad group perpetrated the assault on hotels in the Egyptian peninsula killing 19 people.

After Saidani arrest, Hamas increased its alert level in fear of a retaliation attack from the Tawhid al-Jihad group. Authorities fear that the terror group may attempt to kidnap or attack Hamas leaders.

Hamas and the Palestinian Authority (PA) share control of the Palestinian territories. In June 2007, Hamas ended months of bloody fighting with the Fatah party, led by current PA President Mahmoud Abbas. Hamas took control over the Gaza Strip while leaving Abbas in control of the West Bank.

Abbas and the Hamas-dominated parliament remain in power despite the fact that their terms have expired. Abbas has been trying to schedule Palestinian elections but ruled out poll without the participation of Gaza.
