Philippine rebels burn two bus drivers to death

2011-03-05 21:55:29 GMT+7 (ICT)

ALMERIA, PHILIPPINES (BNO NEWS) -- Two bus drivers were torched to death early Saturday in the Philippines when a group of suspected communist rebels set fire to two buses, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.

A group of nine men poured gasoline on Arnel Montano,43, and Edwin Bargola,47, while they were sleeping inside a bus owned by Silver Star Bus Liner before dawn in the town of Almeria in Biliran province. The rebels also torched another bus that was parked before escaping on three motorcycles.

Two men on a motorcycle were later arrested at a police checkpoint on the Biliran Bridge since their motorcycle had no license plates. The two gave conflicting statements as to where they had come from and where they were going. They were taken to police headquarters for interrogation.

Inspector Edwin Cura, police chief of Almeria, said police have yet to determine the motive for the attack, according to the newspaper.

Communist rebels have been fighting the Philippine government since the late 1960s.
