Investing in kasikorn ETFs and Gold

Featured Replies

I downloaded this info from kasikorn website.

Any foreigner can open an account via K Wealth but actually one has to go into the branch as I did more than 8 months ago. It will not be possible to do it directly on the app on your phone.

If the U.S equity market tanks for whatever reason I will be buying into the S&P500 ETF below probably,

RE the gold fund, what do you think about investing in Gold now? Everyone says buy physical gold but I prefer Funds/ spot paper contracts.

Actually I want to invest in Copper but still searching for how to do this from Thailand. Any suggestions

thanks

Congrats. You have done some research.

In short: To buy phisical Gold in Thailand is a daily event in Thailand and nothing special. To buy "paper Gold" by a Thai Bank is a different matter, as they have no "minute by minute" access to fast moving Gold markets. For this you will need a internationally accepted trading platform, especially if you intend to trade in Copper or other commodities.

Go slow.

Any reason you're using money in Thailand to invest in the US, other than no tax on capital gains for Thai tax residents?

The funds at Kbank are just ishares funds in a green wrapper, so you'll be paying the ishares expenses 0.03% for IVV) as well as Kbank's management fee.

Does the Th-US DTA cover dividends or would you get stung with a 30% withholding tax on dividends if you invested directly into the US situs ETFs?

FWIW I opened up an IBKR account (From Thailand) & my US ETFs are domiciled in Ireland so I get the 15% rate (Though my main reason for investing in Non US/UK Situs ETFs is they're outside of the scope of IHT).

I think the ides is that investment by way of the bank is an investment in a fund. Those kinds of funds employ people who do have access tot he gold markets. They do all the work.

Yes, all international funds bought in Thailand have some kind of double fee.

Well, okay then! You're not Amellikan?

Open an international account with Schwab, file your W-8BEN, and start investing. As a non-US'er you'll pay 15% on dividends, but 0% on capital gains. (actual tax withholding may depend on treaty?) Dividend tax is withheld by the brokerage and reported to IRS, so no US tax forms required from you.

Buy non-dividend paying ETF's to avoid the tax bite. That's how Thai banks help you get around that. Their management envelope internally reinvests the dividends from the ETF's they hold, so they aren't passed on to you. No dividends means no 10% Thai tax, and capital gains from sales are untaxed.

This practice is not specific for Thai banks. Fund management companies all around the world usually charge additional fees for investments in other countries.

It is just an ETF though. They aren't managing anything.

No one should be buying gold and no one should be 'investing' in Thailand.

What you need is a Thai brokerage account with access to foreign stocks and ETF's, not an account with a fund management company offering funds. The fund management companies will always charge a fee for their service managed or not. In this case for example Kasikorn Securites would be a better option, it offers access to US and Hongkong markets. There are other stock brokers offering even more markets for trading.

I’’m a Brit so no CGT (Excluding Property) anyway & Dividends are treated as “Disregarded” Income so no income tax (cannot reclaim withheld tax) But everything i hold that’s non-UK situs doesn't even need to be reported on my UK Tax Return & isn't subject to Inheritance Tax when i die so I'm gradually getting out of UK situs assets to Irish ones.

Now is one of the best times there has ever been to invest in Gold. It is clear Gold has finished its correction and is about to take off northwards again.

However, one would not buy physical gold, that you have to hold for a long time. It locks you in.

By far the best way to profit from gold is to trade XAU/USD yourself. Only in this way can you make maximum profit. For this you do not need to do it on a platform in Thailand, you can do that using a broker in various different countries. You can even do it trading other people's money if you use a prop firm and pass the challenge. It's a wonderful world. If you go the prop firm route and lose, you don't even lose your own money, just the account.

Must confess, I am not familiar with "prop firms". Can you supply some details? How does it work? How to go about it?

You basically pay a small fee, say 280 USD for a 50,000 USD account challenge or 540 for a 100,000 USD account challenge.

You have to achieve a profit target, 10 or 8 percent, without getting hit by a loss exceeding a certain percentage, say 6 percent.

If you manage this, then you get the 50,000 USD account and can trade it. Any profits you make are 80 or 90 percent yours. If you lose, you just lose the account, not your money.

Check out fundednext or FTMO.

I just googled that as I had no idea. It sounds like some kind of casino challenge on steroids. 😁

In a casino you drop money on red or black, or play cards. It is pure gambling.

When you trade Forex, you have access to information. Let's say the US just announced it will enlarge its Bond buy back program. If you are smart, you will know this will lower bond yields and thus Gold will rise. So you can trade XAU/USD long.

Or if the US invaded Iran, this will increase the price of oil, and thus Gold will fall, so you can short XAU/USD.

This is forex trading. It is based on information freely available on fundamentals, and technical analysis.

So you have a lot more information when you trade Forex, than when you gamble in a casino.

No US Estate Tax Implications for me as I'm British but I don't know the rules for US Expats...

Although they're listed on the LSE, the ETF's that I hold (E.g. JEGP.L) are considered Irish Domiciled and considered offshore assets by HMRC so the income is not taxable for Non-UK Tax Residents (You don't even need to report them on your Tax Return).

No tax at all in Ireland so the only tax is the 15% from the US Withholding tax.

Ok. But it seems to be that the prop firm always wins, otherwise they would not do this business.

If the 15% is significant you can file and likely get that back

Thanks - very useful [I'm an Aussie, so like you don't need to deal with the US world-wide taxing]. How have you dealt with inheritance considerations - is a US Will required to cover IBKR holdings????

1 hour ago, msbkk said:

The prop firm doesn't always win, data published by Topstep (a prop firm) indicates that roughly 51.8% of individual participants who enter one or more Trading Combine evaluation accounts successfully advance to the funded (Express Funded Account) level at least once. However, advancing to the funded level does not mean more than half end up keeping profits long-term; only about 28% to 33% of those who reach the funded level actually go on to successfully secure a pay out.

So the prop firm wins about 70% of the time. 30% or so of traders are able to make money.

Perfectly normal, if you think how many men play football and then calculate the percentage of men who are able to play professionally, about 0.05% the odds of trading successfully are much higher.

Good point, Ive dealt with the IHT side but haven’t updated my UK Will yet to add the IBKR account.

I did set-up a separate “Joint With Survivorship” account on IBKR so the GF gets it without a Will or Probate.

You don't need to use a Thai banking app. You can trade XAU/USD either

1) With your own money directly using a broker like Roboforex or

2) Using a prop firm account

In both cases you'll need a credit card to fund the account with the broker or to pay for the prop firm challenge. You can use a Wise account credit card or a credit card from an account in your home country.
