Anyone Familiar With San Khom Near Udon Thani ?

I'd like a definite answer on something, but I need to find people who are familiar with the culture North-East of Udon Thani, around San Khom.

I'd like to know just how deeply entrenched the custom of Sin Sod is, in this area specifically. My fiancee says that although it is different in other places in Thailand, around San Khom, the culture is that Sin Sod is paid to the parents AND THEY KEEP IT.

I simply can not change her mind on this by saying that other Thai parents return the money the next day, after it is "shown" at the wedding.

I've read all the Sin Sod threads and started a couple, but I need a specific answer for this specific area.

I simply don't need any negative comments about Sin Sod.....I've had them from MYSELF already.

How about we move this to the Issan Forum, as you are really interested in that areas take on this.

We got married in a village between Khorat and Khon Kaen. Sin sot is alive and well there...but did get most of my money returned...to make it easier, I just transferred it to her bank and at the ceremony, the MIL just showed the bank book! It was transferred back 2 days later...less some that I left so they could upgrade the house and get me a western toilet!!!!!!!!! :)

So, per the OP's request, let's keep this civil.

I live 40 klicks East from Udon Thani.

To me sin son here seems to be a way to contribute to the parents well being because they lose an income form the work of one of their daughters.

Never heard any of it to be returned, subsequently

I would like to precise that I have not paid sin sot and that my wife spent age 15 to 30 to work for the benefit of her parents.

When money would be sent regularly a letter from her father would arrive asking WHEN?

Never have her parents inquired about her well being.

I find this a very sad way of valuating your children, but then hey, it's their culture isn't????

And let's not generalize here :whistling:

I don't believe one could clearly caste any such standards as to the practice of sin sod across Isaan, or the rest of Thailand for that matter. Every situation and locale will have a different take on it.

Hey Latindancer, How you doing?

There is a Sang khom in nong khai and another bout half hour drive from amphur Phen near bahn don dua etc,

I have married a Thai from Ban Dung Pak Tiem in Sang khom, Near amphur Phen North east Udon is this the area you are refering to? If so which village is she from ?

My wife says sin sod is a gift around her area NOT returned to husband this goes for thai and farang I've seen it myself. Your wife has been married before, So she's not new to this but will want the best gift for her parents you need to discuss with her your realistic budget and future plans. DO you expect to send the family monthly support money, will you all live together in your or their home will you be living outside Thailand and who pays for visa's can you afford both?

Let me know what you decide to do It all really depends on lots of factors really!

Good luck
