Ampol Food Forced to Import Coconuts As Shortage Looms

Leading food processor Ampol Food has been forced to import coconuts from overseas after domestic outputs have been on a decline since February last year.

The firm says it will also have to raise its prices.

Domestic sales manager of Ampol Food Processing Limited Sonthaya Worawong said coconut output has been low since February of last year, and a shortage could be expected soon.

He explained that more than 100,000 rai of coconut plantations were damaged by pests and widespread drought last year.

The manager said his company has been forced to import coconuts from overseas, which currently accounts for 70 percent of its total coconut stock.

According to Sonthaya, at least 100 tons of coconuts are used everyday in the manufacturing and processing of coconut-based products.

He expects the output problem to be settled within two years.

However, Sonthaya said that the current supply constraints will cause coconut prices to rise.

Fresh coconuts currently cost 40 baht a kilogram, while fresh coconut milk is selling at 65 to 70 baht.

He added that the price is expected to stay at current levels for at least another five months.

Ampol Food has raised the price of its coconut products twice, but promises that there will be no further hike from this month onwards.

Consumers have recently opted for packaged coconut milk since it is cheaper and can be kept longer.

Ampol Food has set a target of 30 percent growth this year, with sales volume of 2.2 billion baht.

Last year, the firm took in 1.6 billion baht in revenue, mostly from the sale of coconut cream products.

It is planning to improve market strategies for other product lines, to better cater to consumer needs.

Monk’s health to be boosted nationwide

CHIANG MAI (NNT) – The Ministry of Public Health is pressing ahead with its project to improve health of monks and novices nationwide after finding that they are risking major health illnesses.

Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit on Friday presided over the launch of the mobile medical team for monks and novices as well as religious leaders, at Si Soda Monastery in the northern province of Chiang Mai.

The ministry has been conducting physical health examination on 370,000 monks and novices across the country since November 2010. So far, about 100,000 monks and novices have undergone the checking. The rest are expected to go through the process by April this year.

According to the Minister, monks are facing risk of getting major chronic diseases such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and cancer because of diets and lifestyles. People usually offer alms with food they consider ‘auspicious to their prosperity’, which are mostly sweet and fatty. Monks also have 45% chance of getting smoking-related illnesses.

Mr Jurin stated that his ministry will soon discuss with the Sangha Supreme Council ways to arrange healthier dishes for monks since they are restricted from taking physical exercises.

The police are reporting that no progress in the investigation into a theft at an army camp in Prachuap Khiri Khan province has been made, as the rogue soldiers believed to have been involved cannot be found.

Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha has confirmed that a number of firearms were stolen from the Thanarat Infantry Camp in Prachaup Khiri Khan province.

Prayuth is holding the camp commander responsible for the inventory discrepancy and says that the theft was carried out with the help of a sergeant major, who was working with some outsiders.

Initially, all related officials were suspended and could face more severe disciplinary action if found guilty of involvement.

The local police force is reporting that no progress has been made in the investigation, as they have yet to be contacted by the army about the whereabouts of the sergeant major.

Additionally, the police have not been able to locate the army lieutenant, who was the first person to report the theft.

At any rate, local law enforcement authorities expect more cooperation from the armed forces in the upcoming week.

Meanwhile, the army authority in the southernmost region has been ordered to confirm a report that the stolen firearms were sold on the black market for a mere 5,000 to 10,000 baht each.
