It 'can' be easy if you know what settings to use. I'd recommend you choose your router and then simply call your provider and have them walk you through the setup. English speaking individuals are generally available. I started my modem/router journey here, and ended up very happy here. There's some useful information in both articles. It's been about 3 months now with everything working great, no drops, and no frustration.

I think i can do it i have set up routers in the pas (early internet days). I think the main problem will be the password.

I'm sure you can do it. However, there are several settings unique to setting up a modem which you'll need to know to avoid major headaches and your providers help number is very useful for this.

The password for your current model is probably the default password, but these can change from model to model, series to series, so the likely hood of getting the right password might not be that easy.

Just choose your best modem/router.. hook it up.. and call the help desk to have them walk you through it. There is no charge for the call or help.

Although I did setup my Belkin router myself, not very difficult, I later found out that many of the shops will actually setup your modem for you when you purchase it. You need your user name and password, of course, so they can enter it for you.

Im leaning towards the LinksysDual-Band Wireless-N ADSL2 Modem Gigabit Router (WAG320N) because it has a gigabit connection. I know it wont make a difference for browsing but i got a home network here and some NAS servers hooked up to it.

For 3BB the necessary settings are:

pppoe

enc: LLC

vpi/vci 0/33

MTU 1432

and then of course your username & password.

You might want to check out this tread as well.

I think the only universal settings for Thailand is the pppoe and vpi.. My (for True 16mb service) vci is 100, MTU 1492, and your bridging depends on your configuration. Some modems are capable of finding these settings automatically with help from the setup disk, but I find setup disks are usually more trouble than their worth.

My guess, is it ends up taking less time to dial the IP's help number and have them walk you through the setup, than to try all the different settings he'll find in these threads. At least in the case of true, each English speaking help desk person actually spoke English well and there were no misunderstandings.

What i would do before setting it up is making some screen prints and pst them in jpg so i could see what the original settings are. At least that is the plan im not sure when i will do it because sometimes the router works ok for a while and then it just f... up.
