Tycoon In Takeover Bid For Post + Matichon

The hostile takeover bid for the Bangkok Post and Matichon by GMM Grammy is bad news for Thailand's increasingly hobbled media. According to the Nation, Grammy honcho Paiboon is known to have "a very close relationship with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra."

It doesn't take a genius to figure out this is no coincidence coming as it does shortly after a post reporter was likely set up and the the paper threatened with a gazillion baht lawsuit over the airport runway cracks story.

If this succeeds, the government will be able to control the two daily newspapers read by the creme de la creme of Thai society.

I've cancelled my subscription to the Post.

RIP Thailand's "free press." :o

Surprising how little interest in this topic. It is a major move in Thai politics and media control. I am amazed at how little the residents take heed of this subtle take over technique.

Subtle is not a word that I would use to describe the steady forward-march of ShinCorp in all its guises. The majority of Thais still think Mr. Big walks on water...
