My little girl (6) has been accepted into a state sponsored Thai school. I don't know much about these schools, but I do know that only kids with very high grades are accepted.

She was (still is) in a private Thai school until some government bod visited the school and asked to speak with us. She starts at the new school when the new term starts.

Can any of you guys who might know what I am talking about point me in the direction of something (in English) I can read about this program, google turns up nothing.

Thanks.

Without the name of the school it would be impossible I think,

If the school is one of the better demonstration schools it may be as good or better than some of the "international" schools.

It's on sukhumvit 71.

"ร.ร.สุเหร่าสามอิน"

There was more than one to choose from. Although one on Silom was already full and another on Silom refused her because she is epileptic. Despite her high test results, the head said that she must 'slow'. Ignorance abounds.

We were thinking of others but had to act quickly and we live on 71.

I am finding it listed on the Thai websites but not much info about it,

They have a website (I think) but it is incomplete.

http://www.suraosam-...ates/temp1.html

I am confused by the name of the school Surao=Mosque?

it is kindergarten-P6 ...

It has gotten awards for dramatic arts, sports, and (cooking????)

So does it change much between specific schools?

We were told that these schools are dotted about the place, so I though that all schools in the program would be more or less the same.

Cheers

I think my translation of Surao may be faulty --- this might almost be better in the Thai language section. It isn't the standard name of a demonstration school.

From what i understand from the website the school was founded by 2 people called HadjayeeIbrohim and HadjaSaynab Bunmalurd. Pretty Muslim sounding first names. I think the name of the area is called Sam-In and i assume there is a mosque there which is called the Sam-In mosque. It also says the local community is populated by mostly Muslims. The information about the school on its website is quite sparse but it seems to have a lot of sports facilities. It's the first time i've seen a mosque called by that name, normally i see them named as Masjid.

There is a Muslim element about that school. But we have been assured that religion is not on the curriculum. I am lead to believe that the school has two separate sections, muslim and non-muslin. I live not far from the school and it is not an overly Muslim area, although there is a mosque.

The Muslim thingy doesn't bother me provided there is no indoctrination whatsoever, again we have been assured this would not happen. I made it quite clear that it was something I am not willing to negotiate on.

The other schools my wife went to were not Muslim related in any way. The program in itself is not a Muslim thing.

Surao is more formal I believe ... I think I know the school (I used to live off of Onnut and had a friend with a coffee-shop across from the supermarket on 71, so would ride over there fairly often.

That's pretty much what I would have said, too.

The original owners were a Haji and a Hajja, i.e. a husband and wife who'd both made the Haj to Mecca.

If it is or was a Muslim community there'd be a mosque nearby.

Otherwise, my quick look at the website suggests it's a fairly modest little school. 660 kids and 31 teachers - relatively small for a Bangkok school.

It doesn't appear to have a specifically Muslim character - just a normal Thai primary school.
