hi all,

need a bit of quick numbers i.e. prices:

a work colleage from my kibbutz is going to thailand (lucky him!) with his brother for two weeks over our holidays:

they are not backpacker types but what we call: solid i.e. prefer to eat in established places, wont eat non kosher (misses out on all the yummy stuff in my opinion), want a decent not decadent hotel, not a hostel thing...

what they want from me is prices of things like:

bottle of water

bottle of coke (cola)

taxi tuk tuk etc

also, with the weather in chiang mai being very wet, is going to islands a better deal then north? i would say that they are 'typical' tourist material, not adventureous, not stingy not big spendours and want to fill two weeks with something exotic and relaxed compared to israel.

any suggestions would be appreciated (they dont like diving, but jeep trips, that sort of thing they do)

just a few quick ideas i have to give them the info tomorrow

he cant google he doesnt read english and i dont have patience...... thanx to those that will volunteer some basic info....

also, internal flights prices, like bangkok to the islands or something

and no recommendations for 'eye candy', nana, etc. his wife is morroccan and as equally quick with a knife as a thai woman is reputed to be... :o

thanks in advance

Just want to reply with wow and israelian married with a marroccan wife. Nice! I never expected that. Because all of my marroccan friends really hate the israeli's and muslims are really strict about this sort of things. Still nice though!

Tell them to forget it!

There is no way they can travel around Thailand and expect to be able to eat kosher food, unless they bring all the food with them.

Whilst there are no Kosher restaurants in Thailand, and probably no kosher food in the supermarkets, it surely depends on how observant your friends are.

It is my understanding that even quite observant Jews are allowed to eat and drink what they have to to preserve life. So presuming that they try to stick to acceptable food that was either uncooked, or just went to Muslim restaurants and ordered whatever was appropriate they should be okay. Obviously no pig fat in Muslim restaurants, and there are a lot of them around.

I hope they come to Thailand, and take some wonderful memories back with them.

Shalom.

Plenty of Halal Muslim restaurants in the main cities where they will have an opportunity to dine with the neighbors for a change. But if they are strict kosher, as opposed to liberal kosher eating kosher in non-certified establishments, then they will have some challenges outside the main cities.

So a vuz-vuz married to a chuk-chuk eh?

johpa,

yeah!!! have a few mixes like that here on my kibbutz, my best friend is morroccan (born there actually, first born of a family of 10 kids, and religious), married to a polish kibbutznik!!!!

thanx i'll give him the tip about the restaurants, he can mix with our neighbors no prob, he speaks army arabic!

fanta, morroccan jewish not muslem : there are a large percentage of israelis who are from north africa, turkey, kurdistan etc. :o

i know there must be kosher food in thailand in the large cities because i know of very orthodox people who travel there so will have to dig around a bit

yes he will eat non kosher food as long as its not the forbidden stuff like bugs, pork, eels, and other non kosher animals: he'll stick with chicken and beef,

when we say kosher, we dont always mean strict, but just not including all the (yummy) seafood pork etc stuff....

of course he wont see all of thailand in two weeks, he just wants a few stops along the way (he's inbetween high powered jobs) of interest and not sleeping on a beach which he could do in eilat (uggh!)

any concrete info? as for prices, and for my general knowlege too....

yeah!!! have a few mixes like that here on my kibbutz,

My former meshek was mostly vuz-vuz but when in the Big Green (ZHL) I hung out with mostly Morrocans and Yemenites.

Sorry I can't help with the hard core tourist stuff like hotels. There use to be a Hebrew tour guide that was followed assiduously by the Israelis which may now include more upscale recommendations.

Bottle of water 6bht pint bottle up, can coke 15bht, 1.5 litres 24bht , Tuk Tuk in Bangkok 80 bht for as far as you are likely to want to go, down. Bangkok to samui about 2400bht first and last flight about 3000bht otherwise, 300 bht departure tax from Samui, I love Samui who needs to go to a city like Chiang Mai when on holiday? look at www.bangkokair.com for booking.

On my first trip to Samui, my first stop in Thailand i never once felt i was being ripped, and although said to be more expensive than other places in Thailand never had to thing twice about the price of anything and I would say I am tight!.

If they can't read English they are going to have a tough time in Thailand.

They could go down to the South and help build a wall to keep the muslims in place. :o

I met a jewish guy who came here for a month in the summer. He was eating bbq pork in no time. That is a great idea for them to eat at strictly muslim restaurants being there are so many and the food is similar to kibbitz chow

When I stayed in Chiang Mai, the guest house next to me was 100% jewish. And as you travel around, a fairly good percentage of the backpackers are Israeli. So, there has to be options around. I saw quite a few places catering to them.

How did you know?

I am not sure I would want to stay in a place that advertised that it was for Israelis.

Too much of target for the muslims.

Mind you muslim food will also covers the same rules as kosher,

though I cannot see your friends being too popular in such places,

just as they are not popular in the Arab world in general.

My guest house did not have a restaurant. So, I ate there and met many people during my one week stay. Great travelers, interesting to hear all their stories. All the signs were in Hebrew, the food was ethnic, and the tours they offered were also in Hebrew. I guess I was a little nervous about being next door...just glad I was not in the south!!!!

Just the Bangkok area can keep you busy for two weeks. I believe their is a synagogue in bangkok.

Barry

yeah?

IMO, once you have seen the palace and the surroundings, there is nothing in BKK that can keep one busy for more than 2 hours. Emporium shopping, maybe.

Unless interested in nana or soi cowboy.

As I noted earlier, there use to be an Israeli tour guide, and may still be, similar to the Lonely PLanet guide that was followed assiduously by the young Israelis. The guesthouses mentioned in that guide were more than happy to cater to that clientele and at times were occupied 100% by Israeli guests. There use to be a guesthouse off of Huay Khao in Chiang Mai like that.

Needless to say, these places do not advertise as such, it is a result of their being in the guide book and of course word of mouth and they do accept all as guests. And quite frankly, as a former guesthouse operator myself, the Israelis were not always the most welcome of nationalities at other establishments as they were often ill mannered. But I had more problems with young French and Italian women stealing my blankets. On a personal level the Israelis were quite irritating, but the Eurotrash, always polite and oh so hip, would rob us and the other guests blind, and then point fingers at our Thai staff.

I based my reply on - you have seen a temple, you have seen them all.

The muddy dump called a river is not worth a look. I wanted to mention the Yarra river in Melbourne but that's not a comparison.

2 weeks in BKK and no girls? Nothing there for more than a day or two. Maybe 3, including the traffic jams.

So... You are speaking for all Thais, especially the police, and most falangs living in Thailand... I think not.

You stereotype these people, whom you have never met, accusing THEM of showing discust [sic] and contempt for other religions and cultures. The irony of this statement would be hilarious if it wasn't so disgusting.

And, what a nerve, to be living in a foreign country and tell others to go home.

Your previous postings suggest you are from the uk. In that case, I hope no one gets the impression that we are all like you.

There's just no excuse for this type of uninformed, arrogant bigotry.

Chickenlegs.

PS. - Please change your nick, you're giving us chickens a bad name.

thanx to the kind offer in korat, if it was me i would be there in a minute (i alraedy told him i would switch: he takes my kid to boston to visit my folks, i go with his brother to thailand :o:D )

i think the thread can be closed before it becomes an anti/pro israeli tourist diatribe like one other thread turned into once before

thanx all for answers... am counting the months to the next year for my next trip etc....

thats fine by me "chicken soup"

just so as we know exactly what your views are.

you are free to hold them. however pathetic and stupid they may be. they are your views and make sure you look after them , views on anything are probably a rare occurence in your little world.

however if you are unable to back up your views and opinions with fact or put some meat on the bones of your statements when asked then perhaps this forum is not for you.

perhaps you should be posting on dogsbollox.com or a similar kind of forum where your intellect is not taxed beyond its limited abilities.

if you wish to criticize the behaviour of israeli or any other national group of tourists then by all means do so , positive or negative criticism is welcomed.

but the undercurrent of hatred that came through in your post marks you as a true "glomp" as the israelis might say.

im always pleased when racists full of ignorance and hatred talk straight , now those on this forum know just where you stand , and even though you stand up to your neck in dogsh!t , we appreciate your honesty.

Tax: Excellent. We can all easily dig up dirt on every nationality. British, German, Chinese, French, Japanese, American, etc. Easily done. Unfortunately, they are generalizations. And don't hold true for all individuals. What this helps feed is stereotypes and racism. And that is not a good thing. :o

as the resident israeli, thanx for all the back up but as i said, maybe time to close the thread....

i just want to add that it seems that at least five different people from my kibbutz (different ages and types of trip) are going to thailand this next month or so (except for me :o ); each person doing their own 'thing'... and theyve all come to me to ask for advice ( a few tips for manners, food, and a few words, and a warning not to be the 'loud rude israeli ' type which i -who work in tourism- love to hate :D

bye bye thanx, and please close before people start wasting keyboard time on stupid racist etc stuff.......
