Once you have your ticket to depart and you get to the airport can you pay your overstay fine with a visa card at immigration or does it have to be cash

They are expecting cash - suspect if visa were all you had it would require using ATM/exchange to obtain cash but that is only a guess.

Here at the airport in Phuket there is a big sign stating all overstays has to be paid in Thai baht and in cash.
