Anyone know or got any ideas about Internet options where NO landline is available ? I have CAT but the service at best is not up to much and can go as low as 5kbps but the norm is aroumd 20kbps. I have tried adding a large ariel which inproved the signal strength but did nothing for the actual connection speed.

Are there any other options out there ? any info would be greatly appreciated :jap:

Sounds like there is something wrong with your cat connection, have you downloaded the latest software for the PC and set it to EVDO only?

Gary.......Thanks for the reply, I wasnt aware of any "other" software ?, only have what is pre-loaded into the dongle that I have, where and how do I get any applicable updates ?

Do you live in a Wi-Fi 'hotspot'?

I have a friend in BKK who lives in a True Wi-Fi hotspot and gets a great service for about 550B a month (12 months minimum).

EVDO is the high speed mode, what modem do you have? If it is a Novatel MC760? Cat have stopped selling this modem but I have had "issues" recently, first thing I was told to do is update the software however last I looked it was no longer on the CAT web site. The problem is the switching like you have, with the new software you can set to EVDO only. If you have this modem go to CAT and get the update, CAT should be much faster than what you are getting.

Yes it is the Novatel, I've had it about 2 yrs, was great for the first year but now its going down hill rapidly. I went into the local CAT office and they suggested the aerial, took it home and tried it in various locations, increased the signal but not the speed so I took it straight back and got my 2500 baht back. They didnt say anything about issues etc with Novatel, only said maybe it was more users etc and when I said I was only 1 km from the mast they were very surprised i was not getting better but didnt offer any solutions.

Just did another test now as it seemed to be a little better tonight and got 200k download and 150k upload..........on bangkok server

There is definitely an issue with the software, I found every person you talk to at CAT tells you a different story, very frustrating.

My solution, if somebody say's no we don't have or can't do, ask another and another till you get what you asked for, amazing how many times it happens, instead of saying sorry I don't know they say no we don't have it. One example we went to carefour and asked for birthday candles, 3 shop assistants said no (Mai mee) kept telling my wife to ask another, finally 4th person say's they are over there.
