Shockwave Flash Crashing Problem

Featured Replies

Using Chrome, for the last week, continually getting the error message "The following plug-in has crashed: Shockwave Flash" when opening web pages, such as TV. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. No difference. Seems ok using IE, but i prefer Chrome and just wonder if there is a fix out there, or if anyone else is experiencing this problem? Thanks.

Yes same here but for many months, refresh the page normally fixes it, or failing that close and restart Chrome

Using Chrome here, never had that problem. You said you tried uninstalling and reinstalling ... assuming you mean Flash, maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome. You might want to try clearing cache first, a corrupted cache can create very odd problems.

Thanks Phil. Will do.

I ran into a similar problem whilst using Chromium (on Linux). Turns out the Adblock extension was causing problems on some flash sites, especially YouTube. If you're using Adblock, you may need to reconfigure it accordingly.

After uninstalling Chrome, also double-check to make sure nothing is left behind.

Another thing to be sure of is that you have the correct version (Other Browsers) of Flash Player.

OK. I uninstalled Adobe Flash again and this time when i went to download new version i got a message to say that download is not necessary as Google Chrome already has a flash player built in. Indeed, so far, everything seems to work fine.

FWIW, you don't need to install Flash since it's included with Google Chrome by default. As a matter of fact, everytime Adobe releases a new version of Flash player, Chrome gets updated as well. I've noticed this for quite sometime now. Therefore, if you have problems with Flash whilst using Chrome (or Chromium), uninstall and reinstall the browser.

Back to having the same problem again. Adobe Flash Player i have uninstalled and not reinstalled. Chrome i have uninstalled and reinstalled twice. Same message comes up in a big yellow bar at the top of the screen. The following plug in has crashed: Shockwave Flash. To the left of the error message there is a jigsaw piece.

Did you try the two suggestions by Supernova?

1) Extensions can sometimes conflict. Check all extensions you have installed. Start by disabling all of them and see if that helps. If it does, start enabling extensions one by one until you find the one with the problem.

2) After you uninstall Chrome make sure you've cleaned up the settings directory as explained above.

The problem hasn't recurred since I installed the latest version of Chrome: 12.0.712.0 Beta about a week ago. You could try that. Good luck!

I take it you were experiencing the same problem Roy?

I must admit, i tried pretty much all the suggestions kindly offered - all those that my limited computering skills allowed me to anyway - and got nowhere, so for the time being have given up and reverted back to IE.

Hi Rixalex - yes, the problem started a few weeks ago. A google search found it to be a widespread headache. I tried many of the "fixes" suggested by geeks (but not those involving messing with the registry). One or two worked temporarily but the crash returned after a day or two. I also went back to IE if I needed flash. Eventually I decided I might as well install the latest version: Chrome Beta (12.0.712.0) and all is OK for over a week now. In Chrome, just click the wrench/spanner symbol and then "About Google Chrome" to see which version you currently have.

How did you get Chrome Beta (12.0.712.0) ? I have Chrome Beta installed but only version 11.0.something....

I see ... seems 12.x is not really beta but alpha (dev channel). A little too rough for me, I'll stay with the beta version ;)

Thanks though.

Yes, Chrome 12.x is dev channel update. They state: "This release contains lots of behind the scenes work (code cleanup and refactorings) in addition to numerous crash and regresson fixes". Maybe a fix for Shockwave Flash crash is included - I haven't gone into the details. I tried Chrome Stable & Beta channels 10.x but they did not solve the problem for me. Have found Chrome 12.x meets my needs for basic web surfing, emails, Skype, video viewing, etc., so am keeping it as is for now.

Many thanks for sharing your experiences. Glad to hear it's not just me! Will give Beta a go.

Thanks also Phil and Super for their input.
