Yes.

No Thai food for me. Before, when I was a newbie, I did.

My freezer in BKK holds dozens of meat pies. From Big John and his clueless staff.

And eat-all-u-can from Ekamai KFC.

When I lived in Australia, Asian food was on the plate every day.

Now, living in Japan, Asian food is out.

If you go Thai upcountry, you would see the waste they eat, I could not even watch them pigging on it. Guts, fat, fried fat, deep fried fat, brrrr

Now, there is a toaster in the hometown(170 baht) , I toast my bread and enjoy my vegemite.

In short, I bring my bread and my butter. Love the rice soup but that's not enough.

Here, in Tokyo, 2 times a week I go to a Thai restaurant for lunch. Basil chicken (krapao ghai) excellent quality. No skin, no bones, no shit as in Thai.

Where's the best place to buy meat pies or Cornish pasties in Bangkok.

Thai food, Thai food Thai food, ......I quite like it, but its just too much of the same thing. I've got Thai food coming out of my ass.

Feel realy sorry for you!

You're missing out on one of the very real pleasures of living in Thailand.

When in LOS I mostly stay out in the wilds of Udon and the food is a very large pull for me .....starting with simple things like sticky rice and fried egg for breakfast absolutely the best pork noodle soup for lunch and a visit to the Jim jum for the evening or maybe the 30b restaurant across the road superb and I come from a hotel and restaurant background. At first I liked to watch them prepare my meals and know exactly what went in.Now they know me well and I get excellent food and service.I agree that some stuff is iffy but thats your choice plenty of good fresh food available.

Don't get put off so easily!!

As for pies can't remember the last one I ate must be years ago now.Don't miss them at all.Still I know I'll miss some quality fish and chips. Can't have everything!!

Big John soi 11 off Soi 55 (Thong Lo)...but just.

Thai staff have no idea what they are selling, seems it's not their main business anyway.

But, the pies are frozen and Thai staff incompetence in meat pies can't do much against. Mostly (unknown to the staff) there are labels - beef and mushroom, beef and curry...

So, what have I set my heart for when I come to my BKK home? Meat pies from the freezer, direct into microwave...2 of them. Papaya salad the day after and every day but meat pies...yummm

I think the OP was referring to some of the stuff that goes into many Thai dishes.

Bone, gristle, great lumps of fat and skin.

I love Thai food, but my lady knows that I only want meat in my meal, not all the other parts of the animal that many westerners would give to the dog. Often when I go to the village parties, I can only pick at the food because of the rubbish (to my mind) in it.

When you eat Thai food in a restaurant, the meat is usually morer to my taste.

Thai people often actually prefer the parts that we would throw away.

This is good for us as it means that lean meat fillet is the same price or cheaper than fat gristle and skin :o

Been there, seen it,tried to eat it, gave up.

That is why I said I check what goes in.I always ask for pork from outside not the intestines etc Tried rat it was ok but once I tried it wouldn't go out of my way to eat it again.I've been to new year /wedding parties where EVERYTHING from the freshly slaughtered buffalo apart from the hide and hooves were eaten!!! There is still plenty of good meat and fresh veg to eat.If you don't want ants eggs, grubs or other insects etc don't eat them. If you have money there is plenty of other choices, and some great small restaurants even in the back of beyond.I'm told I'm easy to feed in relation to many of the falangs about, who never eat ANY Thai food.

i've never tried big johns pies , but i occasionally have english pies (chicken and mushroom , steak and kidney , etc) at "homeworks" on the food court floor at the emporium. superb . strange to see thais tucking into meat pies but they do there.

good "school dinner" type desserts with custard there too.

as for not eating any thai food whilst in thailand , well i think you are missing out on one of the best reasons for coming here. yes, some of the tuk tuk driver food is hard to even look at sometimes , but you dont have to eat chicken skin and pigs bum. there more to thai food than that.

Well, I live in Japan, so Asian food is everywhere. Only in Tokyo 100K restaurants and takeaways.

As for meat pies, in my previous life I would cross to the other side of the road rather than passing by a pie shop.

Now, I crave them.

What a shock a shop assistant in Tokyo pie shop (a poor immitation of real pies) suffered when I said "Empty your tray into this bag" and handed over my backpack. 16 pies came into my possession in matter of seconds. They were expensive and not tasty. :o

I vary my diet, sometimes I crave Thai food, sometimes farang food. Just depends. I have lived here for years so really don't think I am "missing" anything by not eating Thai food all the time. Heck, my husband doesn't eat Thai food all the time--he had fish and chips for dinner, I had sausage & mash last night we had Tom Yum Goong and Garlic & Pepper Pork.

Mushy peas are dried marrowfat peas which have been soaked overnight and then boiled. They are a great favourite of the north of England and are a traditional accompaniment to fish and chips.

INGREDIENTS: Dried marrowfat peas - 225 g, Bicarbonate of soda - * tsp, Unsalted butter - 15 g, Salt and freshly ground black pepper.

COOKING:1. In a large basin, soak the peas overnight (or for at least 4 hours) in three times their volume of cold water, with the bicarbonate of soda.

2. Rinse the peas well and put them into a medium saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to simmer for approximately 1 - 2 hours stirring from time to time, until the peas are cooked and have fallen to a softened mush.

3. If they appear too wet, continue cooking over a low heat to drive off any excess moisture, but take care to keep stirring, to prevent them burning on the base of the pan.

4. Beat in the butter, salt and pepper to taste.

Mushy pea's :o Never liked them.

I'm mainly a thai food person, home cooked by the wife and sometimes an indian, italian or anything with a Med style, greek, european and arabic. No real english dishes take my fancy. :D

hold on.... Pie and Mash :D

I'm originally from Wigan ... chips, mushy peas and 'a mixture'. Mmmmmmm :D

'A mixture' is those floaty bits that get dredged out of the fish fryer, taste like fish but given free to us poor waifs and strays. :o

Moved down south and got a taste for pea fritters, mushy peas in a ball, battered and fried with the fish.

I could murder a big plate of this lot right now!

The ultimate in healthy eating, not.

with this I agree...this is AUTHENTIC thai food like what you get in bus stations and what probably 90% of thais eat regularly...they can't afford anything else.

When I ask the wife about nice duck curries and etc. that we get in thai restaurants outside of Thailand she sneers and says 'that's chinese food'. For her, if it doesn't smell awful, not prepared with a handful of chiles per mouthful and is not otherwise disgusting it ain't the real thing...

when in Thailand me for the BLTs, omlettes with toast and tabasco and tutsi's own khao pad and oven roasted ribs...

I agree. I'm thai enthusiast but I don't like thai food too much. I like to eat everything on plate but in Thailand it's impossible. Even if you order shrimp soup why do they leave shell on shrimp's tail? Same with shrimp coctail, fingers on mayonnaise when you eat them.

My mate lives in Huangzou in China and he's the same. Every time i go to see him i have to take meat pies for him but his speciality is Mowberry Pork Pies.

As for me. When in Thai, i usually eat Thai food (without the guts etc) for 2 days or so and then i need a good old stodgy meal. My body (if you know what i mean :o ) tells me that i need to eat stodge. The wifey comes to Blighty this weekend, so i'll see what she makes of the Thai restaurant near to us. Should be interesting :D

...in Pattaya, I would drive 15km just to buy sandwiches in the Pattaya Bangkok Hospital.

They have some French bakery there. Being healthy and going hospitals just for western food?

Yes, I do that.

Someone mentioned a cornish pasty...well there is a pie stall on the seafront at Pattaya now, and I bought a "Cornish " pasty there. I have to say it tasted OK - a bit bland but it was not a Cornish pasty, it was a minced beef turn-over.

As for thre OP's problem with offal etc; he doesn't know what he's missing out on. In many countries, notably Oz, USA and some parts of UK people have forgotten that you can eat virtually everything in an animal and the muscular tissue in probably the least tasty. Flavour comes from things like skin, blood and fat, so bring on the pigs trotters, fried sheep brains and sweetbreads...(they're not <deleted> BTW)....
