I also like Hitchens. He clearly supports the existence of Israel as a Jewish state. He questions why Jewish Israel came to be in the first place. That's reasonable to do from an academic point of view, but doesn't mean there is any justification to destroy it now. Both Palestinians AND Jews have historical claims on those lands and contrary to Arab propaganda, not all of the Jewish claims are ancient. How to settle this now? I think two sovereign states.

Jingthing,

That has been tried and their borders would have been defined in 1948, however as an earlier post I made explained the facts on the ground have moved on considerably since then due mainly to Arab/Palestinian refusal to recognise Israel, but also in part due to intransigence on both sides. I agree the Palestinians should have a state but in my oppinion their collective recognition of Israel is a pre-requisite and then the horse trading over details could begin.

The bottom line is that a de-radicalisation of the Arab world needs to happen before any of this is possible and religious extremism of all flavours is on the rise so the time in my view is just not right.

I totally share your skepticism that this can actually happen, but to me, that's the goal. There are large factions on both sides who really don't want two states, for different reasons. I also think as long as the Israelis believe any negotiated two state solution is simply a crafty strategy "first step" towards full Palestinian liberation of all the land, that the Israelis will justly have a hard time buying any deal. So I guess we kind of agree, some big things need to change, and if anything, things are going in the opposite direction. Both sides totally distrust each other with good reason. This is why I wonder if what's really needed is a big heavy hand to MAKE this happen on both sides, and ensure security and stability for both sides. The USA of course, and there is no political will to do that.

So facts on the ground, those who are now seriously talking about one state with two governments are being listened to. I also doubt that will ever happen either, but the fact that people are talking about it as a serious option, does show how remote a negotiated two state solution is anytime soon.

Talks between the two sides have been stalled since late September following Israel's refusal to extend a 10-month freeze on settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territory.

With Zionists will never be peace in Palestine.

Would you care to comment on the following. In this thread this is a statement from IDF

""The IDF regrets the involvement of civilians in this incident, however it must be noted that the Hamas terrorist organization chooses to operate from within its civilian population and use them as 'human shields'

When Hamas rockets hit Israel or Kill civilians, all we hear is

"Allah aKBAR"

So who is killing in the name of God and who is killing(regretfully) in self defense?

Up to the last big invasion of Gazza the victims of rocket attacks was a MASSIVE 0. It was only during the slaughter in Gazza that a rocket fired by Hamas claimed it's first victim. So less of the spin & crying the victim as far as them rockets are concerned. They was just a inconvenience

You try to justify killing women & Kids with bs lies.

I was not aware that firing rockets INTO civilians and TARGETING civilians is acceptable, irrespective of rockers achieving its aim or not.

But i guess in your opinion TRYING AND HOPING TO KILL in the name of GOD is also acceptable.

Barak: Israel facing regional 'earthquake' and diplomatic 'tsunami'

Speaking at New York event, Defense Minister says Israel has proven it is an island of stability, an 'outpost of the free world values in a tough neighborhood.'

By Natasha Mozgovaya and Haaretz Service

Israel is facing an "earthquake" rattling Middle East regimes as well as the threat of an anti-Israeli diplomatic tsunami, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Tuesday.

Addressing a convention organized by the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces in New York, Barak said that 2011 has proven fateful for Israel, as it faces "on the one hand an 'historic earthquake' in the Middle East, on the other hand a diplomatic 'tsunami' that is rising against Israel."

"It will culminate in September this year with the intended recognition of a Palestinian state along the '67 lines, followed by a wide effort aimed at de-legitimization of Israel," the defense minister said.

Another fine example of the racist arrogance of the Zionists and their paranoia that the whole world is against them. and when Palestinians are treated equal it is the end of the world.

Or perhaps this one

Two rockets explode in residential Beersheba;

10 mortars explode in Eshkol, Shaar Hanegev regions; Islamic Jihad claims responsibility for Beersheba, Ashdod rocket fire.

Two rockets exploded in Beersheba on Wednesday morning, and ten mortar shells fell in the Sha'ar Hanegev and Eshkol Regional Councils.

A siren was heard as a rocket fell in an open field in Beersheba at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Seven mortar shells fell in the Eshkol Regional Council, followed shortly after by three more near a kibbutz in the Sha'ar Hanegev Regional Council. No injuries were reported in either explosion.

A 122-millimeter Grad rocket landed in a private yard of a residential area in Beersheba earlier Wednesday morning.

The Al-Quds Brigades, a branch of Islamic Jihad, took responsibility for the recent Grad rocket attacks on Beersheba, AFP reported on Wednesday.

"This is a reaction the the crimes of Zionism against our nation in Gaza," Islamic Jihad announced in a statement.

Only hours before, a Grad rocket launched from the northern Gaza Strip exploded south of Ashdod.

Islamic Jihad reportedly took responsibility for the Ashdod attack as well.

The UK has been attacked many times by terrorist (IRA) did the government start bombing the catholics ? The British army done some bad things during them times Bloody Sunday being just 1. However none was as bad as what the Israelis are doing now.

Lets also not forget that the only reason there is a Israel is because the Israelis was the first to use terrorism as a means to an end . The first ever terrorist attack was on the British by the future Israelis.

The Israelis /Jews are Arabs but seem to think they have a divine right to do as they please. Self proclaimed chosen ones need I say more.

Thats funny but i was not aware that Israel bombed Muslims.

And now Jews are Arabs-LOL, Chacha, you may want to go back to your cave and do some reading.

As for your last comments

According to the Koran and many Muslims, Christians and Jews have left the true path of their religion. Therefore, they are infidels (unbelievers) like Buddhists and Hindus, for example. In other words, according to the Koran, only Muslims, i.e. 19% of the world population, are true believers. The rest are unbelievers and infidels. The Koran says: You are the best of the nations raised up for (the benefit of) men; you enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong and believe in Allah; and if the followers of the Book had believed it would have been better for them; of them (some) are believers and most of them are transgressors. Who is responsible for that explosion? The international community with its recognition of a Palestinian state along the '67 lines? the diplomatic tsunami?

b.The Al-Quds Brigade

c. Fatah-Al (something brigade)

d. ASIAN,(That same ASIAN who killed the family and kids)

I await your apoligy

You think they dropped out of the sky ? dear me

I only hope that possibly you can not read well.

Having some genetic similarities does not make Jews Arabs and vice versa.

Even by some crazy notion hypothetically assuming that Jews and Arabs are brothers, it again does not make Jews Arabs and vice versa.

To talk of 'Jewish Arabs' is to assume that the Middle East was ethnically homogenous when in fact it was made up of a patchwork of different ethno-religious groups many of whom spoke Arabic or were Arabic in culture, but were not Arab. A more correct term would would be ' pre-Arab' Jews, as the Jews, like Christian groups, were indigenous to the region long before the 7th century Arab-Muslim invasion.

I am pretty sure this is taught in primary school.
