Khon Kaen owner tells of Bt10,000 ransom demand

Dog kidnapping has been on rise in Khon Kaen in the past year, with the abduction of good breed dogs - especially people-friendly golden retrievers, Siberian huskies, chihuahuas and pugs.

Many pet owners are posting missing dog messages on http://www.khonkaenlink.info/. One tearfully said a Bt10,000 ransom was demanded for her pug but, after she filed a police complaint, she never heard from then dognapper again.

Khonkaenlink webmaster Chumphon Para said more and more missing dog messages had been posted on the website over the past year; but most owners did not get their dogs back despite rewards being offered, some as high as Bt10,000.

He believed many owners didn't turn to the law to get their dogs back, fearing police would see their claims as trivial. As an alternative, many were using social media to quickly reach a wide audience.

Jonsurang Namprom said she loved her eight-month-old pug "Jokey, as if it was her child. She bought it for Bt4,000 but it has now disappeared after her boyfriend walked it to Beuang Kaen Nakhon, not far from her home, and they got separated.

"It was stolen - because a security camera from a convenience store near home showed Jokey being taken by three teens on a motorbike," she said.

Jonsurang filed a police complaint and posted a missing dog message on Khonkaenlink with a Bt10,000 reward. She received a phone call from someone claiming to have bought the dog from teenagers and then resold it to a Ban Phai resident. The caller said he would leave the dog at a location for her in return for her wiring Bt10,000 to the caller's bank account - which she agreed.

But when she told the caller she had filed a police complaint, the line went dead and the number couldn't be reached again. "I love and miss Jokey so much… I still wait for it and never want to raise another pet dog," she said tearfully.

Another dog owner,Apisara Boonyapan, 43, recalled the day her two-year-old golden retriever "Jeng", which she bought for Bt2,700, went missing after she left it running around outside the family's townhouse for only five minutes. A neighbour told her Jeng was last seen chasing after a pick-up truck, whose driver seemed to have been observing the dog for a while.

This topic borders on the edge of being totally laughable. In the 20 years I have been living in Thailand, I can count on one hand how many times I've seen a Thai dog owner with his/her dog on a leash. Most let them run un-checked all day with no consideration of the other people living around them. I feel sorry for the dogs that have been stolen, but give me a break and don't ask me to shed any tears for the people who have lost them by not being responsible pet owners.

Police believe that this is the work of thieves. A clampdown on Sakhon Nakhon, the hub of spaniel sandwiches, is in progress.

That is why i beat my Bang Kaew and kick it a lot so its extra aggressive when i let it roam free. Nobody would ever dare to steal it. Too bad for the people walking around but hey i would not shed a tear for them as i have to protect my dog. It often comes back with the blood of a few children on it and sometimes part of an arm so he has something to chew on later on :D (sarcasm mode for those of you who can't figure that out)

I let my dog roam free too a couple of times a day for half an hour or an hour. Knowing the dog wont go far and i keep an ear out for any barking so i can respond. This is Thailand people let their dogs out this way its not the West. Just accept this is the way it is, i accept that my dog could be stolen. I used to walk my dog but he liked walking free much more and i got funny looks from the locals.

I worry more about the dog being hit by a car then him getting stolen. Here in the muh bahn some people drive like crazy. Besides im not in Khon Kaen.

The west has got to be mentioned hasn't it, WHY ? You said 'this is Thailand' so it's an excuse for not taking care, apart from buffalo cattle, dogs and cats are treated are treated more bad than rats.

Dogs are sold here in the Nth east for food, pick ups are calling everyday to exchange pets for a plastic bucket (it's sick).

Because Thai people don't care too much about a dogs life, other people dont have to do the same.

I may be wrong, but anyone that has a dog in a town house, especially if it's a large dog, and don't walk it, to me thats not on, and not fair on the dog. I would worry sick if my dogs were on the street, it's dangerous to others, and bad for the dogs.

I have 7 dogs and have a 6 foot wall around my land, the dogs will never go out to foul up the street, I love them too much and wouldn't want them to come to harm. They were all strays and near to death when I rescued them, after they were dumped near my home. If I had the means and younger I would set up a shelter for strays.

You said you accept that your dog could be stolen=========so doesn't it hurt you-the thought ???

You said you worry about him getting hit by a car !!!! the poor dog would be hurt not you.

Just accept this is the way it is. Ha Ha. with your attitude you shouldn't keep a dog, but you do take care of it more than many Thai owners, but thats not saying much. Excuse me to the Thai owners who DO take care this is not meant for all.

Dogs are packed into trucks and sent up to Sakhon Nakhon province for domestic consumption and also for export to Vietnam across from Cambodia. Only a few hundred miles to Hanoi from Isan..Thais will do anything for money.

Easy.. Just buy another one. Dogs are cheap these days. You have to feed them, they shit everywhere and they don't even work.:D

Not all, Mr dog lover. They give me more love than most people offer. dogs are not like SOME bar girls or boys.

Your a funny man, you made my day. I also accept i can get killed in traffic. Some things can happen you cant ban all risks. I love my dog a lot and i know the dog would hate me if he was not allowed to walk outside a couple of times a day. Running free. I have taken my dogs to water falls too waking with them swimming with them. Then i also accept they could get hurt but i know they love it. So i calculate the risk against the benefits.

Your dogs could be struck by lightning.. or get sick from walking in your garden. I take it you still let them walk there. You just accept the risk (however small) and check if it outweighs the benefits.

You maybe love your dogs but NOT enough, there are risks, but you try not to go down that road. I would rather have my dog struck by lightening than be maimed in a road accident, or kill a motor bike rider because the dog is loose on the road.

actually I am a funny man and enjoy life, and have a fantastic Nth England sense of humour. You sound as though you give your dogs some lovely times, brilliant, BUT you put them and others in danger when it suits you, thats all. Just go that one step further and go out with them on the road. Let them free in wide open spaces.

I let my dogs out too but made sure they understood the highway code first. Far more sensible around cars than the local kids.

I can understand the larger dogs being nicked. But as for Chihuahuas, Pugs and other small breeds. I don't think that I have seen one walking, they are always being carried. So don't know when they get nicked? The other day I saw a girl, with one of those baby carriers slung in front of her. With I kid you not a bloody dog in it?

The dogs are smart enough not to get hit. In general they get out of the way of cars. Its like not letting your children out because they may get hit. It all depends on the risks of course. I would not let a baby out alone but at an older age sure why not. Same with dogs if the risk is not too much (im not on a road just a moo bahn soi) then they can go out.

Have I mentioned that on my first trip into Isaan, a dog crossing the road nearly killed me and the people I had in my car. I did nt bother touching the brakes or swerving to avoid it. result was that it burst the front skirt, bumper, cracked the radiator open and damaged the aircon gas tank. obviously a well fed house dog. it was scooped from the asphalt.

This happened like 6.30pm 15 KMs from Mukdahan on a saturday. Had to wait for the insurance from khon khean to send me a towing van from mukdahan. took like 2 hours.

Seems dog owners in Isaan dont like the dogs to.

DOG KIDNAPPING???? you cannot kidnap a dog. You can steal a dog but not kidnap.

To kidnap you would need a young goat then?

Why don't they come down to Bangkok. We have many thousands that they would be welcome to take.

I'll second that! In fact, I'm listening to one of the many ugly, vicious, mangy curs in my village bark its guts out right now. What I wouldn't give for a dognapping ring around here.

Anything like this? Sorry don't have a real canine problem in Australia just 30+ million Roos

Give the Bowaers the benefit of acknowledging their smarts, they may be the ones doing the kidnapping. Maybe we should look at the angle that there is a human missing and possibly in need of rescue.
