BBC reporting buildings swaying in Bangkok ?

I noted on the report above that it was also very deep, would have lessened the shock.

CNN showed a map which showed severe to extreme shakes near the epicentre in Myanmar. Mild shakes in Chiangmai. Judging from their map, I see no reason why anywhere in Bangkok would have suffered at all. Sirens more likely to be connected with a fire or road accident or someone important is driving home after dinner and needs the roads cleared for him/her.

2 strong quakes hit Burma

The quakes struck seconds apart at 8:25 a.m. local time Friday near the Southeast Asian country's borders with Thailand and Laos, about 110 kilometres from the northern Thai city of Chiang Rai.

They were initially measured at 7.0 magnitude, but that was quickly lowered to 6.8.

The U.S. Geological Survey says one quake was shallow, centred 10 kilometres below the surface of the earth, and the other struck at a depth of 230 kilometres, which is exceptionally deep.

The effects could be felt as far away as the Thai capital of Bangkok, where buildings swayed.

Witnesses also said people were evacuated from Hanoi after tremors hit the Vietnam capital.

Quake hit Laos and felt in Thailand Wednesday night

An earthquake measured at 4.7 Richter hit Laos late Wednesday and can be felt in many provinces of Thailand.

The quake rocked a hospital in Loei province for about 5 seconds, sending patients and others running of the buildings.

The quake can be also felt in Nan, Phrae, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Nong Buo Lampu and Khon Kaen.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in Saiyaburi province of Laos, about 55 kilometers from Nan's Mae Rim district of Thailand.

In 2007 a powerful earthquake, measured magnitue 6.1, hit western Laos, with tremors felt as far as away as Thailand and Vietnam.

Buildings swayed in both the Thai and Vietnamese capitals. People fled shopping centres and buildings were evacuated in Bangkok.

motion detectors in banks etc will activate in an earthquake

sirens etc are likely to be police dealing with them rather than responding to any damage

Apparently there is a fire, reported to be quite large in a McDonalds store in one of the fashion complexes in Pratuman somewhere near the Amari Watergate hotel. My condo near first hotel, son just checked, sirens are multiple fire trucks.
