Earthquake In Burma/Thailand

Im in Chong Nonsi area and im hearing an extreme amount of loud sirens, it cant possibly have anything to do with this can it? Anybody have an idea what is happening? Its got to be something big.

CNN showed a map which showed severe to extreme shakes near the epicentre in Myanmar. Mild shakes in Chiangmai. Judging from their map, I see no reason why anywhere in Bangkok would have suffered at all. Sirens more likely to be connected with a fire or road accident or someone important is driving home after dinner and needs the roads cleared for him/her.

LOL.... the fat chick on CNN's 'map' of the 'quake intensity.

The P-waves would have been substantial in Bangkok, arriving about 2 minutes post-event. However, nothing catastrophic would have happened in Chong Nonsi... apart from the usual evening events.

Got the window blinds and desk lamps swinging in the office here in Udon. However, the soap watchers in the next room didn't feel a thing!

Strong 6.8 earthquake rocks northeast Myanmar

2011-03-24 22:19:41 GMT+7 (ICT)

YANGON, BURMA (BNO NEWS) -- A powerful earthquake struck the northeastern region of Burma Thursday evening, near its border with Laos, China, and Thailand; and was felt as far away as Bangkok, Thailand, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The 6.8-magnitude earthquake at 8:25 p.m. local time and was centered about 89 kilometers (55 miles) north of Chiang Rai, Thailand and 772 kilometers (479 miles) north of Bangkok. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep. The initial reading registered a 7.0-magnitude earthquake, but it was revised down to 6.8.

The earthquake was too far inland to generate a tsunami warning, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

No damage or injuries were immediately reported.

the sirens were indeed because of the earthquake. Many people were really freaked out. I was on the 28th floor on Sathorn and it was really shaking hard. The tv crashed to the floor and my friend had a hard time even closing the laptop to get out of the building. Everything seems to be ok now.

Im in Chong Nonsi area and im hearing an extreme amount of loud sirens, it cant possibly have anything to do with this can it? Anybody have an idea what is happening? Its got to be something big.

Strong earthquake hits Myanmar

BANGKOK, March 24, 2011 (AFP) - A strong earthquake struck eastern Myanmar Thursday, the US Geological Survey said, as Thai police reported at least one death and shaking was felt in several countries across southeast Asia.

The quake was felt as far away as Bangkok, almost 800 kilometres (500 miles) south of the epicentre, Hanoi and the Myanmar capital Naypyidaw, and was initially put at magnitude-7.0, before being revised slightly downwards to 6.8.

The epicentre, in the hills of Myanmar close to the borders with Thailand and Laos, was only 10 kilometres (six miles) deep.

It was located 90 kilometres (56 miles) north of Chiang Rai in Thailand and 235 kilometres (146 miles) north-north-east of Chiang Mai, Thailand's second city and a popular tourist destination.

No tsunami warning was issued, with US seismologists saying the tremor was too far inland to generate a devastating wave in the Indian Ocean.

Police in Thailand's Mae Sai district, the northernmost area on the border with Myanmar, said a 52-year-old woman was killed after a wall of her house collapsed during the quake.

Colonel Thanomsak Yospan, superintendent of Mae Sai district police, told AFP that the woman's home was poorly constructed and said she was the only known casualty so far.

In central Hanoi -- two countries away from the epicentre -- the quake was felt as a smooth rocking motion that lasted for several seconds.

Some Hanoi residents described fleeing their homes in panic.

"Suddenly I felt dizzy. I was sitting on my couch. My husband suddenly said the fish were shaking. Then the water from the fishpond came out onto the floor," said Nguyen Thi Hong Hanh, 36, who lives on the 10th floor of a highrise.

"We all rushed to the street. All the other people in the apartments also rushed out."

Dang Hoang Anh Thu, 36, said her 17th-floor apartment also shook.

"I felt it clearly," and saw photo frames moving on one wall, the university teacher said.

"We got out, and saw that all other people in the building were heading downstairs as well."

The city experienced the tremor at about magnitude 5.0, according to Dinh Quoc Van, deputy head of the earthquake monitoring department.

"We are monitoring the situation," Van said.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

Officials in Naypyidaw said they were trying to get more information on the earthquake.

"We felt the earthquake five minutes ago. Our desks were shaken a little. We do not know the detail yet," a Myanmar official yet.

A resident of Mandalay in central Myanmar said the shaking lasted for about five seconds.

"We didn't hear any major damage because of it yet," he said.

In Chiang Mai, just felt a third temblor almost as strong as the first. No damage I'm aware of. Did hear some kids screaming (or maybe farang men). The thing that surprised me was how long the swaying continued (I'm in a 9th floor condo). Reminded me of the wave action of the Mexico City earthquake.
