Pakistan to contact Interpol for Musharraf's arrest

2011-03-26 23:41:27 GMT+7 (ICT)

ISLAMABAD (BNO NEWS) -- An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan on Saturday asked the country's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to contact Interpol for the arrest of former president Pervez Musharraf in the Benazir Bhutto murder case.

During the hearing of the case, the FIA submitted a report, stating it has contacted Britain regarding the arrest of Musharraf, but no progress has been made. The judge asked the agency to contact Interpol and present the accused on April 2, the Express Tribune reported.

The court had issued several arrest warrants for Musharraf, but his spokesman in London said that the former leader will not return to Pakistan.

The prosecutors have named Musharraf as an "accused" in the case, saying that his government failed to provide Benazir with adequate protection. Prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar of the FIA pleaded for the non-bailable arrest warrant against Musharraf, arguing the former president has been named as accused in the interim chalan presented to the court.

Pakistan had earlier sought the Commonwealth's cooperation in extraditing former president Pervez Musharraf from Britain.

Former prime minister Bhutto was shot dead in December 2007 in Rawalpindi while campaigning for the general election.
