Science and Technology Ministry to Unveil Disaster Warning Device

The Science and Technology Ministry will this week unveil a locally-developed weather forecast and disaster warning device.

Science and Technology Minister Weerachai Weerametheekul said the National Science and Technology Development Agency is set to unveil its weather forecast machine some time this week.

He noted his ministry will coordinate with the Interior Ministry on the use of the device to alert residents in disaster-prone areas of possible incidents, in addition to the sending of alert messages via the Internet and the cellular network.

Weerachai added the ministry has been supporting research and development of robotic technology by various agencies.

The ministry, along with Seagate Technology Thailand, the Thai Robotics Society and the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center, jointly organized the Thailand Robotics Humanoid Soccer Championship 2011 in January.

The Phoenix team from King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi won the competition and will compete in an international event in Turkey this July.

The minister noted the younger generation of Thais have spearheaded fast improvements in technology, as evidenced by the number of awards won at international competitions.

He said in the future, robotic technology in Thailand will be further developed and employed to assist in social works such as nursing and disaster prevention and relief.

Actually, this new device will cost upwards of 3 billion baht and is a bowl of somtam that you place on the back porch. If it is wet, it is raining. If it is moving, it is an earthquake. If it is under water, it is flooding. If it is moving horizontally through the air, it is a typhoon. If it is gone, call the fortune teller and confirm with a second opinion from the Tarot.

perhaps the soccer playing robots are been trained to make the somtam?

Shouldnt this be split into two different stories?

Yeah fluff and bullshit. Unless the weather forecasting and disaster warning machine is to be operated by a robot of course.

I'da thought the Thai Asian News Network would be too embarrassed to translate some of these stories clearly geared for domestic consumption.

What self-respecting organisation would seek to reinvent something that must be available off the peg from any number of developed and developing nations. Answer - an overly self-regarding nation like Thailand.

Used to see this all the time as a management consultant - petty local company despots reinventing the wheel for the sake of their own egos; they always fall flat on their faces and end up wasting tons of dosh to get an inferior product.

The main story devolved into the robotic soccer playing machines. So maybe they will have the robots go around and warn everyone of impending disaster. :whistling:

DANGER Will Robinson.................

Before you can be the Hub of disaster you have to create it.:D

Is the device a man running round shouting fire fire??

No, actually it is a robotic Chicken Little, who runs around screaming " The sky is falling. The sky is falling!"

I managed to find a secret dossier photo of the Thai weather warning system, and must admit they are advancing their technology quite rapidly, although surely more string should have been utilised ?

Must be getting ready for April fools day

Thought that was every day in Thailand ?

:jap:

The trouble with reading "The Nonsense" articles everyday is that when April 1st does come around, there is no way left to surpass the everyday stuff.

Maybe the new device is a G200 bomb detector attached to a blimp. When it reaches the (very low) clouds, it will detect if the sun is shining or not.

Made in Thailand. Where else?

Amusing Thailand.

My old gran was our weather forecaster on the farm . If her bunions were giving her stick, rain on the way , if her rheumatics kicked in cold weather was on the way.

If her wrist and hands tingled a warm dry spell was assured. What with her and a bit of seaweed and a pine cone that both hung by the door of the cowshed our weather forecast was around 95% accurate.I
