Why Do Thais Repeat Themselves?

Featured Replies

this is neither a complaint or criticism

simply observations

2 things that happen over and over

one is the dreaded huh?

doesn't matter what i say in what language, english or thai

the response is 'huh?'

if i wait a few seconds before i repeat

it often sinks in, they really did hear me!

in fact i am pleasantly surprised when they dont day huh!

the other is repeating the same thing, idea, concept

when having 'conversations'

i have my theories why

what are yours?

please be culturally sensitive

follow TV rules

and keep the thread open

thanks

เออ ( uuhr) [impolite exclamation of agreement and assent used among close friends only] Yeah.

lol, you think Thai's repeat themselves? Try living in Italy...

I do this now. Whenever I get asked something I go "Uuhr" usually nod and then answer.

uhuh...why do Brits always finish so many statements with "yes?"....when I was a kid it was "init?"..

....it's just a method of acknowledgment mate...yes? ....to tell the other party you are not falling asleep...when I don't comment on the phone sometimes ( bored sh..less) ...people say "hello hello....you still there" ?

Phone rings:

Me- hello!

Them- hellooooaaaw

Me- yes, hello

Them- helloooooaaaaaw

Me- can you hear me?

Them- hellooooooooaaaaaaaaw

Me- can't deal with it so hang up.

Now what is that about? Why can they not say anything, in any language even?

so they dont forget............so they dont forget...........short attention span? short attention span.......

They repeat themselves because they are easily confused.

They say, huh? because they are half deaf from all the noise pollution.

Next.

It's usage might only be considered unworthy {even gauche} in a public sphere - naturally, since everyone used this expressive in familiar surrounding, such wouldn't be looked upon as impolite.

We all do it.

" You know what I mean like "

Another classic especially amongst the Brits at the start of a conversation " f**kin errrrrm ".

Complete absence of self-consciousness and lack of education in social and communication skills. Even 'professional' call center workers (3BB!) show this behavior.

This happens all over Asia not just Thailand.

Usually the phone just gets put down and they hope you will hang up and go away as they don't want to be impolite and tell you they cannot help you.

Asian manners.
