Airlines resume flights to Samui

Thai Airways International has resumed flights to Samui after the airport was reopened.

Yesterday, it flew 600 passengers stranded in the island as the airport was flooded. Today, aside from scheduled flights, it operates four round-trip flights between Bangkok-Samui.

Passengers traveling to this area are advised to keep abreast of news on the situation. For more information, call the THAI Contact Center at Tel. 02-356-1111 , 24-hours a day, or visit www.thaiairways.com .

Bangkok Airways also resumed normal operations to Samui. There will be 17 flights in total for routing between Samui - Bangkok and expect to clear all stranded passengers within today as the weather is starting to clear. Bangkok Airways operates totally 56 flights in-out of Samui including Bangkok-Samui, Chiang Mai-Samui, Phuket-Samui, Krabi-Samui, U-tapao-Samui, Hong Kong-Samui and Singapore-Samui.

House fails to meet quorum again

The House of Representatives failed to meet quorum for three consecutive days Thursday.

The meeting was initially scheduled at 9 am but the chairman of the meeting delayed it to 10:30 am after he saw not many MPs were pressent.

After the meeting started and the House deliberated the second reading of the national rubber bill. Before the House voted the bill, MPs had to identify themselves with their electronic ID cards but the system reported that only 223 MPs were present.

When Democrat MP Thana Chirawanij asked for the rechecking of the number of MPs, it turned out that only 218 MPs were present. It required at least 237 MPs for the House to make quorum.

The meeting was adjourned at 3 pm.

THAI employees donate half million baht to Japan

Thai Airways International on March 30 presented donated funds to assist Japan's earthquake and tsunami victims to Seiji Kojima , Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Thailand.

THAI employees collected Bt508,089 from a fund-raising activity.

Since the natural disaster took place, THAI has assisted the Thai government in transporting 3-5 tonnes of blankets and drinking water as well as necessary items per day. THAI continues to fly to all 5 destinations in Japan, namely Tokyo, Haneda, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka

Confirmed southern flood toll stands at 13 Wednesday

Thirteen people were killed in floods that ravaged eight southern provinces, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department (DPMD) reported Thursday.

DPMD Emergency Operation Center reported that, as of Wednesday morning, floods hit 4,014 villages of 81 districts in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Surat Thani, Trang, Chumphon, Songkhla, Krabi, and Phangnga and affected 842,324 people. Out of 13 people killed excluding those killed in the Krabi's Khao Panom forest flood and landslide, nine were in Nakhon Si Thammarat, three in Surat Thani and one in Phatthalung, while 181 people were injured and one missing - a village headman at Surat Thani's Chaiya district.

Taiwanese man gets 20-year imprisonment for duping others to transfer him Bt2.1m

The Criminal Court Thursday sentenced a Taiwanese man to 20 years in jail after convicting him in duping 23 people to transfer him Bt2.118 million.

Lee Jui Jung was initially sentenced to 69 years in jail for 23 counts of crimes, but the court commuted the punishment by half. But since the law sets the maximum penalty of 20 years, the court gave the maximum jail term on the Taiwanese man.

The court ruled that the man collaborated with others, who were still on the run, to pretend to be a call center and duped their victims to transfer them the money.
