Hiking Compass & Maps - Where?

Featured Replies

Greetings.

A search around the few stores I thought would carry sighting (mirror) compasses - north side of moat, KSK & Airport Plaza - appear to stock only cheap China made models.

Does anyone know where in town to buy a decent quality compass, and hiking/topographical maps for Thailand/northern region?

Thank you.

All the compasses I've seen around are crap. Suriwong book store has topo maps and a PM to TV member mapguy sounds like it could be fruitful...

Thanks for your replies.

D.K books at the moat sells some topo maps as well.

I have a Swiss made Recta DP-6 in mint condition which I do not use any more.

P.M. me if interested

Did the (very cute) bird on floor 3, Plaza, not have any good ones?

Ever considered ditching all that old world stuff and go with an iPhone with GPS? :whistling:

I had a look at the topo maps in DK a while back and I noticed that maps dealing with areas anywhere close to the border areas were only large scale or missing due to army sensitivity or some such security concern. This seems a bit redundant given the level of detail in google maps now. I downloaded the 3D add-on (for google maps) the other week - amazing - I almost got airsick while playing around with it.

Same with the topos at Suriwong. But there are probably better places to be hiking than sensitive border areas, with or without a good map.
