Mae Hong Son smothered by smog

By The Nation

30152654-01.jpg

People in the northern province of Mae Hong Son are facing respiratory problems caused by the high density of smoke particles in the air from wildfires.

Two flights from Mae Hong Son to Chiang Mai were cancelled over the past two days due to a black smoke cloud that caused poor visibility.

More than 10 forest fires have been reported in Mae Hong Son and Chiang Rai.

According to the Pollution Control Department's weather monitoring station, the amount of tiny dust particles in the air in Mae Hong Son is 158 micrograms per cubic metre.

In Chiang Rai, the number of particles was measured at 142.3 micrograms per cubic metre. In Chiang Mai, the figure was 83.1 micrograms per cubic metre.

Chiang Mai regional environmental office chief Apiwat Kunarak said wildfires were caused by farmers burning their land for agricultural activities. He said he did not think the problem would get worse, however.

The smog problem is particularly bad in Thailand's North because its geography means wind and ash from forest fires cannot be blown away.

Merger of SSO and NHSO questioned

By The Nation

30152658-01.jpg

Chief of the Social Security Office (SSO) yesterday called for a careful and thorough interpretation of the 2002 National Health Security Act's Article 10, which refers to merging the SSO with the National Health Security Office (NHSO).

Pan Wannapinit also questioned the Article's third paragraph, which requires that the SSO Fund be handed over to the NHSO. The fund is built from contributions from SSO subscribers, so why should the NHSO get it, he asked. He added that moving the money over would violate the Social Security Act, which says that the fund should cover subscribers' medical expenses and pay for administration of the SSO.

"If we transfer the fund, it will be like we have hired the NHSO to guard it and act as a middleman. If that is so, then wouldn't it be better for the NHSO to amend Article 10 and cancel such fund transfers?"

Wilaiwan Saetia, vice chairperson of the Thai Labour Reconciliation Committee, said she believed that merging the two agencies would not solve any problems. The government should instead study the problems the SSO is facing in detail and improve the agency's quality, efficiency and access to medical treatment. "The most important thing is how to improve all healthcare systems [sSO, NHSO and Civil Service Welfare] and give every citizen access to medical care," she said.

Army has no involvement in pollwatch: Prayuth

By The Nation

The Army did not set up a centre to monitor the balloting as alleged by the opposition, Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha said on Thursday.

"The military's involvement in monitoring the poll is not true and Army Chief of Staff General Dapong Rattanasuwan has not been assigned to check on the balloting," he said.

Prayuth said he saw Pheu Thai MP Jatuporn Promphan as having a habit of fabricating stories.

Politicians should not try to involve the soldiers in their politicking, he said, insisting the military would stay out of the partisan interests and political rivalry.

He also pointed out that the Internal Security Operations Command was formed and tasked to safeguard the national security and not to get entangled in political problems.

Gold Robbers Busted After Robbing 1.2 Mill Worth of Gold

Police have announced the arrest of two gold robbers who made off with 60 gold-baht weight worth 1.2 million baht.

Ratburana police announced earlier this afternoon that they have arrested 19 year old Theerawat Samleerat and 22 year old Akom Phromsawastdi, both natives of Samut Prakarn Province.

Theerawat admitted to having robbed Jirasuwan gold shop on Pracha-uthit Road on March 27.

Theerawat shot 32-year-old Wichuda Chanchai after the employee tried to escape before making off with 24 gold necklaces worth 1.2 million baht.

Theerawat also confessed that he and Akom had also robbed Ruangsuwan gold shop in Soi Suksawasdi 26 and sold the gold for 600,000 baht on July 9 of 2010.

The robber said he used 400,000 baht to pay off debt to a drug agent after failed attempts to deliver 2,000 methamphetamine pills on two occasions.

The two were taken to the two respective crime scenes to re-enact the crimes.

At Jirasuawn gold shop, Wichuda and fellow employees violently attacked Theerawat as they were leaving the crime scene after the re-enactment.

Severe Flooding Increases Goods Prices in South

Severe flooding in the South has not only caused damages and illnesses, but has also doubled the prices of consumer goods at local markets.

The flooding in the South has caused a twofold increase in the prices of goods at Nakorn Sri Thammarat markets, as the goods must be transported from Bangkok to substitute for crops that have been destroyed in the flood.

The goods include cabbages, string beans, Chinese water convolvulus, and pork which has increased by 5 to 10 baht per kilogram.

In Surat Thani Province, floodwater is still blocking roads making it difficult to transport goods.

The prices of goods in the markets remain high.

One of the major problems faced by flood victims is the shortage of drinking water.

Many had to line up at the Provincial Waterworks Authority to ask for water.

Moreover, LPG gas shortages in the area increased transportation costs for distributing drinking water.

The price of water increased from 10 baht, to 100 to 200 baht for each 20-liter container.

Authorities say they will coordinate with dealers to ensure that enough goods are being distributed to all flood victims.
