Two Indonesian villages affected by flashfloods in East Java

EAST JAVA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Two villages on Wednesday were affected and many houses inundated by flash floods in East Java, Indonesia, the Antara news agency reported.

The villages Gladak Anyar and Parteker were severely hit by floods that inundated at least 57 houses in Pamekasan, Madura Island. In Gladak Anyar 49 houses had been flooded while 8 in Parteker.

"The total number of people whose houses have been inundated has reached 208 in the two villages but the figure is still provisional," said Kota sub-district chief Nur Hidajatul Firdaus.

Indonesia has suffered extreme weather conditions since February in various regions including West Sumatra and Bali. The harsh climate in the region is expected to last until April 2011.

Last Saturday, a river dike in Cucukan river collapsed causing the inundation of hundreds of houses in Tanjung Putus village, North Sumatra. The damage worsened overnight and due to the strong flow of the river the village was inundated.

On March 31, thirteen people died due to flash floods that affected in Panai, Papua. The Agadide and Ekadide districts were swept by the floods. Around 34,000 residents were evacuated.
