TEL AVIV, ISRAEL (BNO NEWS) -- At least 60 people were injured on Thursday when two passenger trains collided outside a station north of Tel Aviv in Israel, ynet news reported.

An initial inquiry suggested that the engine driver of a train heading to Tel Aviv from Binyamina did not stop at a red light and crashed into a train coming from the south. Israel Railways said an inquiry commission has been established to investigate the incident.

"A train coming from the south crashed into a train coming traveling from the north. There is one crushed passenger car, but the rest are on the track," Naftali David of the rescue forces said.

Some of the victims, who suffered lacerations, bruises and glass cuts, were treated at the scene and others were rushed to various hospitals.

Witnesses said the train didn't have time to gather speed since it had just left the station of the coastal town of Netanya, according to ynet news.

Last month, a fire broke out in the Naharia-Tel Aviv train due to a brake malfunction. There were no injuries.
