KANDAHAR (BNO NEWS) -- Nine people were killed and several others wounded on Thursday in suicide blasts and gun attacks in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province, officials said.

Pajhwok news agency reported that two attackers held up in an under construction building opened fire at a police training centre just outside Kandahar city. Police chief, Lt. Gen. Mohammad Mujahid, told a news conference that the attackers used heavy and light guns to target police and threw hand grenades. The attackers were later killed by police.

Three hours later, six security personnel were killed and a dozen policemen were injured when a suicide attacker detonated an explosives-filled ambulance near Afghan and international forces who were still in the site of the earlier attack. The victims included four intelligence operatives, one policeman and an Afghan soldier.

The governor's office in a statement said three insurgents thought to have been armed with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades were also killed.

The Taliban fighters have claimed responsibility for the attack. Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, said a large number of Afghan soldiers and police were killed in the attacks.
