Thaksin to Draft Econ Policies for Pheu Thai

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has spoken to the foreign media of his plans if the Pheu Thai Party emerges victorious in the upcoming election.

Former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, who is on a self-imposed exile, spoke to the Wall Street Journal from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates that he will play a key role in determining the country's economic policies if the Pheu Thai Party, which he is sponsoring, gets to head the next government.

Some of the policies he raised include corporate tax cut and amnesty for all politicians who have been banned from politics in the last four years since a military coup ousted him from power.

Thaksin said conflicts have divided Thailand for the past five years and many Thais have been affected emotionally and physically, so it is now time to start anew for the country to be able to move forward.

How good a watch PPP had on the international money scene, that when the USA housing markets and banks crashed, PPP rushed to implement such awesome financial packages that they saved the day for Thailand???

Oh no wait that was Korn.

Ah, he must mean:

Elect his proxies and Thaksin will return and make everyone in Issan rich in 6 months, ' like he fixed Bangkok trafic in 2001.

The message here is that there will not be any policies issued prior to the election.

The campaign will therefore be comprised of the usual drivel about 'the rich' and 'the poor' which should chime in well with our friendly pro-red Che T-shirt wearing fraternity on the forum.

Yep and the same fiscally responsible polices - One for you and ten for me. Funny coming from the man who denied any involvement in the PTP party only a few months ago.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the pro-Thaksin "he made people rich", "he paid off the country's debt with his own money" and "he lowered drug use" (all untrue by the way) crew, this guy is absolute dirt.

I do hope the Red Shirts have an opportunity to ditch him at some point.

Well done Khun Thaksin. You ran the country's economy far better than this mob who are just throwing money to the military and ignoring the country and its poorer people.

Good luck, there is hope for Thailand to become a great country once again, it was going ahead under your govt. So hang in there. The majority of the population want you.

Minor correction it was 1996 or 1997 when k. Thaksin promised to solve Bangkok's traffic problem in six months. He stepped down before. Pity, had he stayed longer he'd seen this dream come through after the June 1997 crash :ermm:

K. Thaksin run the country in a period of worldwide economical boom. Thaksinomics had it's own problems in the long run. These started to become visible in 2005/2006. With the global economical crisis from 2008 till (in a way) now, Thailand would not have escaped major problems. Finance Minister Korn is doing a reasonable job under circumstances. so hang in there PM Abhisit c.s., a larger part of the population wants you

Thaksin accused of being alien in Thai politics

By The Nation

The Election Commission should open an inquiry into the involvement of fugitive Montenegrin Thaksin Shinawatra with the Pheu Thai Party, Democrat MP Boonyod Suktinthai said on Friday.

"Thaksin's involvement might have violated Article 21 of the Political Parties Act banning an alien from intefering with Thai politics," he said.

Boonyod said Thaksin was a fugitive fled from his conviction for abuse of power and that he had subsequently adopted the citizenship of Montenegro.

He said the EC should clear up pertinent legal issues on the Thaksin-Pheu Thai linkage before the poll in order to dispel lingering doubts.

UPDATE

Thaksin intends to guide economic policy if Pheu Thai forms govt

By The Nation

Published on April 9, 2011

Fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra has vowed to push for an amnesty for everybody charged with politically linked offences since the 2006 coup if his Pheu Thai Party wins the upcoming election.

However, he warned that new elections might not be enough to resolve Thailand's political divide, while also voicing his concern that the polls might not go ahead.

In an interview published in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, Thaksin said he intended to play a key role in guiding Thailand's economic policies if the Pheu Thai returned to power.

Thaksin said his immediate focus would be on slashing corporate tax rates and pushing for an amnesty for everybody charged with politically linked offences since the 2006 military coup, which toppled him from power.

"This conflict has been going on for five years and many people have suffered mentally and physically," the paper quoted Thaksin as telling its correspondent in Dubai. "We should start all over again to help the country prosper," Thaksin said.

The deposed PM told the paper that he was reinvigorated by people's uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa and was also encouraged at the prospect of elections in his country. Premier Abhisit Vejjajiva has said he intends to dissolve Parliament in the first week of May, with elections likely in June.

After months of silence, Thaksin has become more vocal of late, indicating he intends to be actively engaged in Thai politics.

According to recent opinion polls, the ruling Democrat Party is locked in a neck-and-neck race with the Pheu Thai and analysts predict the election could produce a hung Parliament. The post-poll scenario will make the support of small parties critical for either of the two major parties to put together a coalition government.

If the For Thais Party wins, it could potentially push through an amnesty law enabling Mr. Thaksin to return to Thailand. Its precampaign pitch to voters is that it is the party that will bring the former premier home. Even if he doesn't return, Mr. Thaksin's latest comments indicate he plans to exert a sizable influence from overseas.

"Thailand's democracy is at a crossroads," The Wall Street Journal quoted Thaksin as saying. "What's happening in the Middle East and North Africa tells you that the whole world, the majority of people, are changing because of the influence of what they see outside of their own country and the impact of the Internet and social networks."

A steady stream of visitors come to his villa here among the golf courses lining the outskirts of Dubai, which is among several countries where he maintains residences. He also regularly phones in to Red Shirt rallies in Thailand to offer protesters encouragement.

"He is highly unpredictable, but in the past few months he has disappeared from view," says Pavin Chachavalpongun, a fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore. "For him to come out now shows he is very much interested in having a say in what happens in Thai politics—and he is a determinant factor in what happens." try to stall the elections or pressure smaller parties from supporting the Pheu Thai in its efforts to form a coalition government.

He pointed to the 2008 experience when a Constitution Court ruling led to the resignation of one pro-Thaksin prime minister while another pro-Thaksin government collapsed after the Constitution Court disbanded the People Power Party for violating election laws.

Thaksin warned that the Thai economy would trail its competitors unless there was a change in focus, and also worried about increasing censorship.

"We can't simply assemble things for others anymore, we need a lot more creativity," Thaksin told the paper. "But if freedom of speech is not there, and there is no freedom for people in getting access to knowledge and capital, how can you be creative? That's what I really worry about."
